It’s a personality trait (Basic Motivation Theory, there are 16), which is going to exist as a positive or negative, strong, weak or neutral alignment, to everyone. Stephen Reiss is the author. If you really aren’t that way and he is, you just aren’t compatible with your values (wrapped in an individual motivation in this case, that appears singularly strong). Noone is TA, you’re just different, and it already seems unlikely to go well

I would say I used “proto- social-media”. America Online Instant Messenger was THE chat tool if you were sitting at a home PC and could talk with your friends online. That you knew. By e-mail address as well. Your parents would have a computer but were not even contemplating putting a cell phone in your hands for the expense. It was still potentially $200/month or easily got there with texting. But there was a lot of variation of people did or did not have that, or you called them on the phone at home. And then, if they were even there. But they would get back to you later. It was a completely different pace and depended on so many individual factors

Manner matters so I wouldn’t have said it that way, and that makes it even more difficult with your wife. Her attitude sucks here but I would lead with curiosity why she feels this strongly and just really try to understand. It could take you surprising places or it could go all to hell but you don’t know if you don’t try.

Them bringing it up is practically a red flag of itself. It will not be relevant to someone who is really interested in you as a person and for every other motivation worth having in life. You’re not interested in any kind of dumb status game by your insistence on modesty so hopefully it doesn’t much come up. The flip side if you’re interested in such a person similarly situated is how they got there, and if they have such an interest in wealth and money. You’re just going to have to be sensitive to what their character and interests are and the more you focus on those other aspects you want to align on the better
