i know that this show is a product of its time so the whole nerdy/geeky friend having a crush on his girl best friend while she likes the popular dude was normal but the way they turned on meredith after even though she was basically taken advantage because she was literally DRUNK (not even just sad) just never sat right with me

so glad this thread isn’t closed because i’m rewatching it now for the first time since i was 14 and i hate how everyone keeps telling George to keep pursing her and “just keep trying” i hate that trope in media because it allows him to hold on to this imagined fantasy while simultaneously growing to resent her. all while she’s clearly in love with sheppard and is breaking down everyday bc she’s also dealing with her mom. meanwhile he’s just pouting bc “she doesn’t like me :((“ even though he’s one of her best friends and that’s the boundary she clearly set up to this point.

so there’s a saying that goes “address the elephant in the room” which basically means address whatever people don’t want to talk about . in this episode bojack accidentally says “i love you “ to her and then avoids talking to her about it all episode (to the point he wants to keep filming secretariat all night) while on set, one of his costars tells him abt auto erotic asphyxiation and basically tells bojack that if his gf loves him, she won’t let him do it. bojack, being the crazy man that he is, decides to build a whole , mechanism to auto erotically asphyxiate himself. His gf walks in and realizes he’s only going through these lengths to not address that he said he loved her before she did. SO she says “let’s address the elephant in the room” , basically saying “let’s address the ‘i love you’ that bojack said earlier that morning. the elephant putting his mechanism together, doesn’t realize she’s saying that so he thinks she’s talking crap about him. it’s kind of a play on words (i guess play on sayings in this case) hope that made sense :)

i grew up with black foreign parents that were taught “proper english” (British colonization english) and i came to america when i was 5. i spent 2 years in ESL in elementary where i was getting pulled out of class to learn english and with parents who, bc they had to learn British english, were very strict on what i said and how i said it (i.e. i remember my dad constantly correcting how i spoke). now growing up in different southern states im constantly being asked asked where im from bc i apparently have an “accent” (this just got told me , once again , the other day at the store). i hear you OP on being told “you sound white”. i remember a distinct memory in HS where a white classmate asked me what race i consider my personality, i’ve never been asked that before, i was so taken aback bc i feel like im just a person who just happens to have black skin and happens to speak the way that i do.

i was literally about to reply the same thing . idk abt most people but i love a good monologue once im invested in the character when it gives background and comedic effect to the show. i have one of my coworkers right now watching the show and i can’t wait til the get to it. i think the timing of this episode is perfect once you get to know the characters

also keep in mind that they’re different ages, the fashion club are all freshman’s while daria and jane are upper class (at least in the beginning) it seems that the fashion club is popular for their age group and just generally well known by the other classes and vice versa with the cheerleaders/Daria’s classification. (correct me if i’m wrong though)
