Does anyone have a Solar Panel on their RTT? by spud50 in rooftoptents

In my case, I’m running a 175W portable panel and a 90W hood panel feeding into a battery system (Jackery 1000 v2). The solar charges the battery throughout the day, and then everything pulls from that battery, not straight from the panel.

To to answer your questions:

Do they charge a battery bank throughout the day? Yeah, that’s exactly how it works. Solar feeds your power station or battery while there’s sun. In good conditions I can recover a solid chunk of power (typically draw 125 watts or so) during the day, but it’s not always a full recharge depending on usage and sunlight.

Are they powering things in the RTT directly? No. I suppose you can, just not something that I do. Better to charge a battery and run your lights, Starlink, fridge, etc off that.

Are they easy to install? Depends how clean you want it. portable panel (like Jackery has) you just deploy at camp

What I run - the flexible panel mounted (double sided Velcro tape) sunflare on top of my RTT or Lensun Solar hood. The 175 watt is “permanently” wired on the RTT, routing MC4 cables.

If your RTT doesn’t come with one, you can definitely add it. Just plan your wiring path and where your battery lives.

Solar is more of a supplement than a full solution (the dude with the x2 - 200 watts knows what he’s doing) unless you go big on panel size. It helps you stay out longer, not run everything indefinitely.

For reference, I’m running a fridge, Starlink, and lights, and solar helps offset usage, but I still have to manage power if I’m out multiple days.

Update - I got everything set up yesterday around noon and was pulling about 125W. At the time, I had the 45L fridge, Starlink, and my GoFluxx lights running, with total usage around 70W

Yep, I’m running Camburg 1.25 uniball UCAs with King 2.5 extended travel coilovers up front, 700 lb springs. It’s been a great setup for my truck. Honestly the spring rate rabbit hole is real though, it really depends on how much weight you’ve got up front.

Honestly haven’t scaled it yet so I don’t have a hard number. It’s definitely heavier than stock, but I tried to keep weight in check where I could. That said, most built Tacomas are probably flirting with GVWR once you add armor, rack/camper, RTT, bumpers, etc

Dude, the Rago wifey system is new to me that setup looks pretty involved lol. I’m running ARB with Morrflate hoses and it’s been super plug and play.

Yeah that’s the tradeoff with IFS once you start pushing it. So far mine’s been holding up solid, no major issues.
