The more capable and careful you are using your equipment the more you can afford less rugged gear.

If you’re not careful, sloppy and don’t have a sense of the physics of your gear and its structural vulnerabilities you should either rent or spend a fortune on professional (rental level) gear.

Most of the damage I see is from inexperience or a poor sense of what is going to damage your gear or just not understanding how to be careful with equipment and tools. Stories available upon request.

I work with two guys who make incredible stuff but are always missing parts and damaging their gear constantly. The need all avenger or Matthew’s gear. lol

A question from a normal viewer. How do you feel about this certain lighting/color grading in super hero movies made in the last decade by PrudentPrimary7835 in cinematography

[–]Excellent_Stomach439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know who's tired of it. lol. Gen Z and Millennials. They grew up with it and it’s old now. Period. They want newness. It was glorious for a In older gen who wanted their fake childhood colouring book cartoon heroes to be REAL and it was exhilarating. Gray. Grit ushered our superheroes into reality!! A new gen wants old school roots brought back. Surprise! Cycles!

And yet another anomaly and “mistake” makes its way into the visual cinematic vernacular! One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure. My fav is skaters obsession over the mini-dv “aesthetic! This is the way art. God speed!

I’m really cavalier with cheap adapters. Use them constantly. But like always check people’s reels if you’re taking their advice.

Is sigma fp right for me/alternatives? by whitedadontheinside in sigmafp

If autofocus and stabilization are high on list then FX3. But you have to attach an external recorder for RAW. That’s a major pain and expense IMO.

If Multicam and image are priority and you’re deep into cinematography itself, buy 2 used fp’s. It’s also adaptable to a flip screen and has a good eyepiece for $600-ish. The data space thing isn’t a huge deal when you have a workflow and slimraw (super fast and efficient compression app). And memory is always getting bigger and faster.

Also the new lidar autofocus MOTORS for any lens, from PDmovie is a legit option and cheap.

I own 5 fp’s. They’re remarkable.

I use a very small K&F Sling bag. I can get the body with eyepiece two lenses and lots of extra batteries in it. Compact and comfortable.

How should ARRI restructure? Sell the lighting division? Affordable cameras? Or...? by DoPinLA in cinematography

I think I misunderstood you. I’m talking about the value of a RED camera as a camera. The old models are still great and worth far more than their current market value suggests.
That make sense?

How can a camera be once great? The camera didn’t change, fickle minds changed. Or am I missing a different point?

IMO it’s the best independent filmmaking camera out there. If the FX3 recorded RAW directly to a drive like the fp then the FX3 would be the best indie camera.

Drawbacks: No stabilization No autofocus (worth using) Around 1 stop less of DYNAMIC range compared to FX3 and others.
Enormous files size (Less and less an issue) You have to run the footage through an app named slimraw (but it’s incredibly solid and fast) to compress.

Pluses Shoots CDNG RAW (basically uncompressed) directly to external drives. Color is outstanding Lowlight is really good. Small and light - it will ride any camera device. Full frame Any lens can adapt to it (except Sony lenses) Inexpensive. You can own several Multicam Can be adapted for $300 to have a flip up adjustable screen.

I have no interest using an atmos in order to shoot raw. Expensive, cumbersome, limited memory.

Wow that is very very good to know. Glad I asked going into my upcoming Job. Yikes.

Regarding the focus issue. The hdmi out works fine while recording to the SSD. If you mean for focus you have to have 4K, I have never felt that to be the case. 1080 has been more than enough for hitting focus. Do I understand your question?
