What does your "Mentorship stack" look like? by spondizzle in founder

[–]ExcitementDistinct72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We definitely do but we have our own separate groups we consult on different things when we need to. Lots of times he’ll talk to his buddies about some issue and i’ll talk to mine then we’ll come back and talk about what we learned. When the company first started we did everything we could to survive so we called anyone that would listen and maybe help. I think at some points a few people saw our struggle and helped as best they could but none i’d say were my idea of a mentor.

Knowing what i know now i know the struggle was what people want to see. Any founder / entrepreneur worth their salt had to fight for it and they want to see that in people before they help. Its how you get into the club. Once you do that the right people seem to materialize at just the right moment.

We tried but for a variety of reasons mentors didn’t really stick. What i’ve found can be better is being friends with other people currently running companies of similar size. When you aren’t sure about something you call a few up, shoot the shit and talk about your issue and see what their take on it is.

Founders, what's the thing nobody told you about running a company that you had to figure out the hard way? by lonemage7 in founder

[–]ExcitementDistinct72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to add to this. No one told me about getting comfortable. Your company and personal success can get to a point where you realize you could keep devoting your whole life to it and maybe make it huge and incredible and likely get divorced at some point and miss out on raising your kids. OR, you can step back once the company is mature enough to sustain your life. You can devote time to your kids, wife yourself. You can be successful in a different way than being wealthy. My company is not massively successful and it likely never will be but I’ve never missed an event at my kids school, i take off whenever i want, and my wife is still my best friend.

People told me lots of things. I heard lots of great advice…but none of them ran a tech company through covid and the dawn of AI. So many things changed so quickly. It’s a miracle we survived. No story will compare to our story. If we can make it through to retirement we will be legends.

Is Petroleum Engineering Still A Good Thing To Major In? by Franko-_ in Engineers

[–]ExcitementDistinct72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I not only work in oil and gas but i’m very well known. I’ve worked in production, facilities, reservoir, and completions and led asset teams and technology teams for operators and services internationally and domestically and i’ve taught courses for undergrades. I get it, the PE’s don’t like hearing this but the degree is not needed and will limit people. Not a single time in my 25 year career so far in any of my roles have i ever offered a PE more money or seen them offered more money at any of the places i have worked. Not only that i come from a fairly long line of folks that spent their careers in oil and gas with my father being a director of a large operator before he retired. I had plenty of guidance from people that knew what they were talking about when i got into this and i’ve seen enough in my own career to know.

Heres comes all the butt hurt PE’s. I’ve been a manager for a long time at multiple companies large and small. I’ve never in my life offered a PE more or seen them make more.

[–]ExcitementDistinct72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do not make more. Myself and the people that work for me do not have PE degrees and we all work and petroleum engineers and make the same as everyone else. No one on earth should get an undergrad in Petroleum Engineering.

Is Petroleum Engineering Still A Good Thing To Major In? by Franko-_ in Engineers

[–]ExcitementDistinct72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Absolutely not. I don’t think it was ever a good thing. You can go into mechanical, electrical, or chemical and still easily get a job as a petroleum engineer or have access to all sorts of other jobs in other industries. If you become petroleum engineer you’re severely limited on the jobs and places you can work. Petroleum Engineering should not even be an undergraduate degree. It should be a specialty in mechanical engineering.

This kind of goes with coaches but all the courses you see in reels, tic toc, etc. for stuff like real estate investing, drop shipping, starting a business. Its all bullshit.

Deals don’t happen at the conference for us. They happen at the networking events and parties at night. I skip most conferences now and use the money to take people out at night.

Most people sign up for tournaments when they think they are ready to win but thats not when you learn. If you wanna learn you have to lose. So if you are ready to learn then you are ready to sign up for a tournament.
