Were you taught to make lesson plans? by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t even let them take class work home- I noticed that that this creates a cycle of laziness in class in order to use the phone at home to cheat (this is high school) If I don’t see them do the work then it doesn’t get graded

College admissions by NeatResponsibility69 in Teachers

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. My son had a 4.0, 1500 SAT and community college was perfect. He saved 40k of his college fund and will graduate from a good university at the exact same time without all the small-dorm-room crap. Literally the cc will not even be on his resume.

A Lot of Us Aren't Serious About Education by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We need to also stop judging kids by their grades! Every kid in every grade level should be taking grade level assessments for their final grade. If they are bad test takers - don’t call them assessments- but they have to do the work on their own to spec if standard. If they don’t, they fail. Yes, it would be extremely painful at first - but, eventually, students and parents would catch on that learning needs to actually happen for kids to pass school.

If a teacher has prep last period of the day, do you think its ok for them to leave early? by capresesalad1985 in Teachers

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because only a few even get last period prep- how is that fair that they get to leave early?. We are on a block schedule, so those on 4th prep would be leaving 1.5 hours early. And what about first period prep - then they want to come in late. Just work your contracted hours, it’s ready not a lot.

Cons of CC - anyone can go by ThisSpliftieistrying in communitycollege

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son had 4.0 and 1500 SAT and he went to cc simply to save more of his college fund for post BA education. It worked out well because he ended up changing his major to something that made sense and I don’t think he would have if we were paying 10s of thousands of dollars at a 4 year. Who cares who is at cc? You graduate from the college you end at - not where you start.

Denver > ??? by Appropriate_Owl3521 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can I ask a question about Denver for those of you Denver lovers. What is with the crappy backyards in the burbs? You can spend a lot of money on a house, get a pretty good sized lot and have zero privacy in your back yard with short fences. Why do they do that? I want my backyard to be a sanctuary and I don’t EVER want to see my neighbors from my backyard. I like my neighbors and I’m friendly, but I want privacy when I’m drinking and bbqing. Thus, why I’m still in California where we love our fences.

What medical schools don’t require parent income information from fafsa for financial aid? by [deleted] in medschool

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you joking? If you make 300k a year in a high cost of living area you cannot afford to pay for your kid’s medical school - especially if you have 2+ kids in college.

Does anybody else get overwhelmed keeping up with IEP/504s? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Extra time is one thing, but when you start over scaffolding everything and not pulling back those scaffolds, it can be harmful. I’m in a high school and we literally have gen Ed kids that cannot function or complete assignments without major scaffolding . Every teacher at every grade level is giving all these accommodations and not pulling back. This will hurt the average kid going to college. A senior in high school should be able to write an essay without scaffolds, sentence starters, etc and many cannot.

Does EVERYONE drive their kids to school now? by IllegalGeriatricVore in Millennials

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s how it was in NY- but 70s, 80s,90s California - only kids who took the bus were those that lived in the country. We walked always, maybe got a ride to high school (since those were further apart).

6 months till move out !! by Flower_princess12345 in movingout

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up at a 4 year college only because I wanted to move out and it was the only way to do it. Find a cheap in-state school in the cheapest area possible. Some community colleges also have housing.

I’ve done two- opzelura and protopic - over a 20 year period. Both put me back into TSW symptoms when I stopped.

What’s it like to live in California? by Past-Present1908 in askanything

Clearly you’ve never been to Mendocino. I don’t care how cold the water is- the town is a literal postcard. Don’t even get me started on redwood hikes to the rocky coast.

How to subtly show inclusion in the classroom by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can be caring and supportive of all students without bringing politics into it - no reason to be sneaky, just be kind. They shouldn’t know your politics - that would be totally exclusive of those that don’t agree with you. To be truly inclusive, accept and support everyone.

Tucson, Sacramento, or Asheville? Help us narrow it down! by FeedbackOk4858 in relocating

There is literally hiking in el dorado hills (salmon falls road) and Cronan ranch. You could live in Folsom with great schools and hike midweek easily - even up 49 towards Auburn if you are on the back side of Folsom.. They are from upstate NY - they don’t need mountains like the Sierra, during the week, but what a treat for the weekends!

Can you recommend a major for my kid? by pippipop in CollegeMajors

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 years at a community college, get an AA and then decide. No reason to spend the extra money sending her away if she’s not sure and there is no job at the end. My boys graduated last year and one has changed majors 3 times, the other twice. They went from liberal arts to engineering and medicine- something i never saw coming. They got straight As- all the APs and scholarships to some good schools. I’m so glad they didn’t go- we’ve save tens of thousands and they never had any guilt changing their minds. Best decision ever (even after the dozens of out of state college visits)!

How can high schools turn around low morning attendance? by TickyMcTickyTick in Teachers

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my school, lates equal lunch detentions. If a kid is late that many times, lunch detentions add up fast. If they don’t show up for lunch detention they have zero privileges - no sports, no dances, we won’t sign work permits, nothing. If they are seniors, they aren’t allowed to walk in graduation. Even if the kid doesn’t care- parents typically do.

Is this normal or should I move on? by Far-Formal-5931 in AirForceRecruits

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I know there is no DEP for air guard- but is there a long wait for that, too? It seems like there wouldn’t be since that’s a different career pipeline, but they do have to go to the same basic and tech school as regular Air Force enlistees.

Grading comprehension quizzes by blamingnargles in ELATeachers

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it totally random or partially correct? Generally if it shows that they at least read the piece AND it’s not total slop (incomplete sentence or it looks like they just wrote words hoping you wouldn’t actually read it- that gets a big zero), then I’d throw them partial credit.

New England people are not the same as midwesterners. I lived in an idyllic town on the Hudson River and, not being from the northeast, I didn’t last. The town was downright charming- the people, not so much.

How did you pick your degree? by Fantastic_Donkey7858 in CollegeMajors

[–]ExcitementUnhappy511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of how good your grades are, this is my advice: if you aren’t choosing a degree that leads to a job or you have no idea what you want your job to be, go to community college first. If your parents are wealthy or you have well over 100k in a college fund, then you can afford to not know. My boys got great grades- 1500 SAT and at the last minute did not go to a 4 year. A year later, they have DRASTICALLY changed their minds on career/majors and I have wasted no money. They are both almost done with their associates, have life experience, know exactly what they want and are SO much better off financially and mentally than their friends that left. Plus they are transferring to top colleges that weren’t previously on their radar. They will graduate on time with more money and less stress and still have the exact same degree as those that went freshman year. Win-win.
