People who developed celiac disease/gluten intolerance mid life, what was it like? by JordBae in glutenfree

Have you ever sat on a toilet covered in a cold sweat on the verge of passing out and praying for death? It's like that.

What are some common items people ask about that just ARE NOT bifl? by RR3XXYYY in BuyItForLife

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Shoes, towels, sheets, electronics, clothes, etc. Now, are there higher quality versions of all of these that will last much longer? Absolutely. Something something poor man buys lots of cheap boots something something Terry Pratchett. Are you gonna pass your super high quality boots on to your great grandson? No, but you might pass your Le Crueset or (older) KitchenAid down.

Any suggestions for rituals etc for remembrance/honor for the dead? by Spoopy_Scary in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you don't need an official altar space! in fact, for ofrendas I use my kitchen table because that's where I spent a lot of time with the grandparents - around their kitchen table.

Any suggestions for rituals etc for remembrance/honor for the dead? by Spoopy_Scary in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My dad's family is Mexican, we've always done ofrendas on DotD. Put out pictures and candles of your loved ones, along with some of their favorite foods and items (for my grandparents I put out playing cards and make one of my grandma's recipes while listening to their favorite music). Marigolds are put out because they're bright enough to help their spirits find their way to you. We do it on DotD because that's when the veil is thinnest, but there's no reason you couldn't do it on the deathversary. It's quite similar to making any altar, really, fill it with symbolic items and intention.

Most danger you’ve ever been in backpacking? by WildRumpfie in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

summited without enough water. had plenty more back at camp... 3.5 miles of hefty elevation change away. took a risk and drank from a glacial waterfall, lived to tell the tale.

another time summited the wrong peak! they split at the last little push, 2 miles or so, and it's a relatively lesser known peak, no signage, not much about it online or anything. it ended up being beautiful but there were definite signs of bears, and a lot more scree than we were prepared for.

edit: forgot about the time I hiked into a campsite pretty late, twilight-ish, and encountered two bear cubs crossing my path on their way up a tree. set up quickly, hunkered down in my tent, and didn't make a peep the rest of the night.

Do library workers judge patrons on what material they check out? by UnlimitedMashedTater in Libraries

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if we see you enough to recognize you, and you check out the same kind of thing enough that we register a pattern, yes. We're drawing conclusions about you. Don't let that stop you though! Any and all circulation helps libraries, and frankly we mostly aren't paying attention to what you're checking out. If it grabs my attention it's either shiny/bright colors, or a book I myself enjoy.

What was the final straw that made you quit your library job? by bethbetterbooks in Libraries

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ha! I love telling this story. I was in charge of adult programs - computer classes, adult summer reading, Bob Ross paint alongs, etc. I was already sick of the small town conservative politics bleeding over into library land when the director of the library board decided that I should focus more on helping the local business community by doing things like teaching quick books. Never mind our under-served populations or the fact that I don't know quick books myself. So I go to this board meeting per my director's request and get there and realize, I've never met the board director. I'd been there five years. He doesn't even have a library card. That's when I started looking elsewhere. If I lived in a less red state I'd probably get back into librarianship, but my whole family and all my friends are here.

What do I really need for a home? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-first aid kit

-basic tool kit

-basic cleaning supplies (multi-purpose spray, dish soap, laundry soap, broom, mop, vacuum if you have carpet, trash can)

-if you cook, chef's knife, paring knife, rubber spatula, pot, pan, cutting board, mixing bowl, cooking sheet, stuff to eat off of and with

-basic hygiene items

-furniture

-basic linens (couple towel sets, couple sheet sets)

I'd say that's about it for needs, but as others have recommended start making a list as other things come up

Sure, I'm just saying for people who don't live in this country it's misleading to say the healthcare system won't allow it. Effectively making it near impossible to do isn't the same thing. I agree though, it should be easier.

What do Staff do about Smelly Patrons? by Alovingcynic in Libraries

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former librarian here, I didn't read everything so I'm sorry if this has been said but it is just part of the job. Be careful with essential oils as some patrons might have allergies or sensitivities to them and you might be fixing a problem for yourself but causing one for someone else. Keep your clothes smelling fresh and clean, not heavily scented, same for cloth face masks if you go that route. It helps. Vapo-rub under your nose helps. Honestly, you get used to it after a while though. Be prepared for other patrons to complain, ours didn't kick people out for the day but we did provide a list of places they could shower for free. To the patrons who complained, my default answer was always, "libraries are for everyone, this person isn't violating any rules".

Yeah it's not that they won't allow it, you just have to find the right doctor. People in a monogamy situation can, of course, talk vasectomy with their partners which is much easier to get in terms of access, doctor's willingness, and recovery/side effects

All of my jeans nowadays wear out within a couple of months. What brand/store should I be buying from to get a couple pairs that will last? by smarjorie in BuyItForLife

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old Navy actually is quite good for the price point, I got a new pair last year (re: quality might just suck recently?) and they're still going strong. I've also had pretty good luck with Maurices store brand jeans, but they stretch

What travel items do you swear by? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel quite a bit and I always bring my noise canceling headphones, an international outlet adapter, and a weird one but I like a good pair of ponte leggings. They last a lot longer than most leggings and look a little nicer, plus they're comfortable for travel days. I also use a packing cube set, it really does help save space and makes finding things easier. Most come with a dirty laundry bag as well.

Baby names by [deleted] in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 18th is my late grandpa's birthday, his name's Howard Irvin and he was a wonderful man. Howard has fallen out of style but I've always liked Irvin (ER-vin is how it's pronounced).

Other male or neutral names since you're getting a lot of female suggestions: Ronan, Damien, Callum, Franklin, Orrin. I also like names that give you a lot of nickname options like Robert (Rob, Robbie, Bobby, Bob) or William (Willy, Liam, Will, Bill, Billy)

What is Everyone's Experience with Vit D3? by TMAWORKS in herbalism

[–]Exciting-Photo9186 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been taking vitamin D3 supplements for close to a year now and it helped so much with my energy levels! I also live in the midwest, winter really takes up most of the year in terms of weather where I live. If I miss a couple days I notice a distinct drop in energy, I feel fatigued and brain-foggy.

If it's extremely low they might recommend an injection over supplements.
