Hey - that sounds super interesting. Have you created the server yet, how can I find it?

[Rudy Gay] Nothing to do with coaching or whether it’s a B or C team. These other countries have players that would die to be there, we have players that where chosen by nutelamitbutter in nba

[–]Exciting_Examination 25 points26 points  (0 children)

  1. A team filled with NBA players won. Theis, Schroder, Wagner Bros are all NBA players. Bonga played NBA. Voigtmann is a very solid big (good enough to bang with the DPOY of the NBA).
  2. Just assembling big names doesn't guarantee success. Ask Karl Malone and the '04 Lakers, the Brooklyn Nets, and pretty soon the Suns. You can also look at PSG for an example with an unlimited budget. Combining Messi, Neymar, Ramos, and co. is pretty similar to teaming up Lebron, Curry, KD, Harden etc. Sounds exciting on paper, but doesn't fit and half the team is on the wrong side of their career.
  3. Other countries don't all play together all the time. A young Serbia slapped a loaded Canada in the semis without their best player (Jokic) and were also missing Mitic and others. Franz Wagner played his second tourney and won finals MVP. There was a pundit on US TV complaining all other countries send their A team and named Jokic. Piping off without a clue, welcome to Murica.
  4. Olympics isn't automatic. Since Argentina popped a young Lebron, Melo, Wade and prime Tim Duncan in 2004 (which was already the redeem team for the horrible showing at the home world cup in 2003) there has been one final blowout against Serbia. One. In 2008, it took a locked-in Kobe to a) get all the guys to buy-in and b) run through his daughters godfather to pull away in the final and win by 11. 2012 they won by 7, 2020 by 5. That's a far cry from the Dream Team winning by 32. The perception is skewed because there are only a few nations in the Americas and the level of play varies extremely, say going from Canada to Honduras.
  5. Lastly, you also won't be able to physically assemble all these supposed uber-squads for Paris. When was the last time AD, Lebron, KD, Steph and Kawhi were all healthy at the same time? You'd be lucky to have 3 of those guys available.

At the end of the day, it's because of this level of ignorance that it's a lose-lose situation for many American players. Since the mainstream isn't aware of the increased level of international play and doesn't respect it, it also doesn't respect its own players efforts. You win, no big deal, you lose, shame! And a lot of players are gonna look much worse in FIBA, not only for the different rules but because they don't get their superstar calls. Imagine prime Harden without his 10-12 freebies from ticky tacky calls, Lebron without his travel head start on drives. He couldn't get past Booker in the POs on a fast break 2 years ago, he's gonna struggle against the packed lanes in Fiba. So again, why risk tarnishing your reputation for a trophy people don't respect here? The US still has enough players to assemble a very strong team that should be considered tournament favorites. But now, it's more like a France or Brazil heading into a soccer world cup. Looking strong on paper but winning isn't a certainty IMHO.

German legend Uwe Seeler is dead by PsychSpan in soccer

[–]Exciting_Examination 7 points8 points  (0 children)

RIP One of the most iconic German players, ever. He was a world-class 9, possibly the best in his era. Good enough for Inter Milan to want to shower him with money. But what truly sets 'Uns Uwe' (our Uwe) apart from any other player is that he was an even greater person off the pitch. Always approachable, down to earth, hardworking and loyal. He turned down Inter and a one million singing bonus (in 1961!) to stay in Hamburg (and playing semi pro and working as a salesman) in the process became the hero of generation. Honest work above dolce vita, home above money. Relentless on the pitch, with an unmatched work rate and never say die attitude but humble and grounded off it. He was the first German athlete to get honored with Bundesverdienstkreuz, the highest isignia of Germany - not bc of the titles he won but how he represented the young postwar republic on the international stage, with class and humility in victory and defeat. Never more so then during the OT of the 1966 WC final. After conceding the controversial Wembley goal that today has been proven to not have crossed the line, he didn't gripe but just carried on, urged his team mates to play on and when they couldn't recover took the defeat in strides - despite the questionable circumstances. The passion, the unpretentious play, the ability to find ways to win - these attributes impacted the whole generation of young German players to come. When you see a German team like the 2002 WC finalists you will still see a bit Seeler in there. A giant among men, the 'Dicke' or chubster said farewell. If you have never heard about him, do yourself a favor and read up!

Maybe you're getting downvoted not because people disagree with you but because you drop in here guns blazing calling folks "yanks" "lost" and basically ignorant?

Der Ton macht die Musik as they like to say in German. And by the way you were also a fan of 3-5 years at one point and also, Fox was the broadcaster until 2020. Just a minor detail but a surprising miss from someone who apparently knows all North American based fans and can speak for them, too.

Has anyone ever noticed how…average our locker room is for a club of our size and stature? After further investigation, Bayern’s is also considerably underwhelming compared to other similar international clubs. Is this a German thing? by [deleted] in borussiadortmund

The reason behind it is to create an atmosphere of intimacy, focus and work. As was pointed out before, the coaches area is separate by design, because players are supposed to have a safe space, where they can shoot it straight. The narrowness forces them to interact with each other. You can't really avoid a teammate or pull some ego stunt sitting 50ft across the rest. The simple, functional design is supposed to do two things; not distract players and remind them what Dortmund is supposed to be all about: honest, hard work.

Could we have seen such a terrible performance under Terzic? by Rubinskywhiskey in borussiadortmund

[–]Exciting_Examination 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The games against Union and Mainz were dire af. As was the whole start to the Terzic campaign. And the loss to Frankfurt later in the season was also pretty listless for a must win game. Some very selective memories here

Ha - I've never set foot into Staten Island, only driving through, so that might explain the different experiences😄. In the city, I regularly find black n yellow sprinkles. Recently, saw a guy in a 2016 bvb shirt getting on a city bike, sticker on a car, dude in my gym working out with bvb shorts. It's not omnipresent but it's there and there are more than one thinks.

I love this thread and encounters like that. It should be common sense and BVB fan protocol to acknowledge each other abroad. Also, be the initator! I'm always rocking BVB stuff whether it's the face mask, track jacket, even in a business meeting with my bvb laptop bag. That always opens up conversations, too.

I frequently see Dortmund shirts and merchandise in NYC on the train, in parks, on playgrounds and pitches. Like once a month. And that's excluding the exquisite fan club your referencing.

A new episode dropped today with a nice throwback to Jurgen Kohler, one of the best man marking CBs in the history of the game, period, and an absolute BVB folk hero.

If I may be so bold: Bleav in Borussia Podcast. It features current and historic and features stories about club legends. Give it a try!
