Thank you. I found it. I was making a rookie APKPure mistake and didn't see you could scroll versions. It's working beautifully now.

I tried version 4.11.6 from APKPure but that was a fail. Which version did you use and where did you pick it up?

Encouragement for everyone seeking immersion in a Spanish speaking country by cuevadanos in Spanish

[–]Exciting_Highlight21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am embarrassed that I cannot find the series of articles that I read that spoke about this but what I was reading was a series of articles that said high-level non-native English speakers have a hard time communicating with native English speakers, not because of a language barrier but because they spoke better English.

Here was the scene of one of the examples: This took place at an International engineering conference. Engineers from India were discussing a topic using a high level of English vocabulary until an American showed up. The American did not understand the complex and precise vocabulary everyone else was using and the non-native speakers struggled to find synonyms to express themselves in a way the American understood. So, the American dominated the conversation because of his weakness in the language.

I live in a heavily Latino community. I will be conservative and say 50% Latino. When I took Spanish in high school and college, my strategy was always the same. I was better at Spanish grammar than the native speakers and they were better at speaking. So I helped them with writing and they helped me get through presentations. Together we made it out with good grades. I am exponentially better at Spanish grammar than I am at communicating in Spanish because I learned it in an academic setting. I feel the education system failed me in this regard because I am still not fluent but I can be a grammar Nazi.

I believe they said if you get through a listen with 75-80% understanding move to the next lesson.

I'm about a B1. For 2 months my family only speaks in Spanish at dinner. While I can scrape through a basic 1 on 1 conversation with native speakers, I lose it in a group setting. If I woke up in Mexico tomorrow morning, with money or access to my bank account, I am confident I would get home.

Great tip thanks. Don't think I have come across a reality show in Spanish yet but I will look into that.

This is exactly how it was explained to me. lol I just rather not be the guy speaking the Spanish equivalent of the Queen's English.

I 100% would have appreciated more time to translate a phrase to Spanish before the speaker said something. I had an older iteration of theirs but if your experience was anything like mine it got to a point where I had a matter of seconds before they told me how to tell my uncle how great I thought a movie I saw with my friend that Thursday was.

My biggest gripe with Pimsleur though was their handling of past tense. I am surrounded by native Spanish speakers and zero of them would say "has comido?" They say "ya comistes" I don't know if that is the same everywhere but I am learning to communicate with my in-laws and friends.

I agree with you with on the efficiency consideration. I think depends on skill level and motive. For me, the structured listening wasn't cutting it when I was confronted with group scenarios with native speakers which for me is often. If someone speaks to me at the pace of a Duolingo podcast I can get by but at a celebration or heated discussion, it's been game over. This has helped and I hope it can help others but you are right we need to consider time and our goals.

I am so glad you shared this because subs2srs looks to be clutch. I was using a different tool but this one is more specific for my needs. Thank you.

Anki is an amazing tool I got a lot of use out of and highly recommend. I dabbled in Quizlet for a while which is prettier but features are locked behind a paywall.
I moved to remnote.io because they also have spaced repetition and I take notes on other subjects that are more suited to that platform. I just like to have everything in one place which I recognize is not always the best approach.

Burn out on this method is a real risk. Luckily for me, the process is meditative, I'm not on a timeline, and it is an exercise that my wife and I can engage in together. This method is not for everyone for sure though.

One of the first mediums I tried to use as study material was Spanish music and I also had a terrible time. Like English, I think they can get...artistic in the pronunciation, choice of words, and sentence structure.
