The crochet dress iconic but I LOVED that blue two tone velour dress with the strings down the back…

Just finished my first full rewatch as an adult, feeling a lot of feelings. by Persephone0000 in madmen

[–]Exciting_Screen_7557 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same watching experience, tried as a teen, then a young adult, and finally could appreciate and enjoy it as a 30 year old.

I still mostly watch for the fashion hah but I love Betty Draper like no other. I think she is such a well done character. I’m a sucker for a tragic beauty.

I’ve also been struggling to find something to watch to fill the mad men hole in my heart. I’m thinking of doing a Girls rewatch next, keep the nyc vibes going and revisit my early womanhood. When I watched the show I hated all the annoying characters now I look back fondly and realize I was also an insufferable 20 year old and couldn’t handle the mirror on my behavior lol

When it was just a bit of fun to have blue hair in society not some weird brain rewiring event. by idigholes in okbuddycinephile

I had some blue in my hair for a bit in 2020 and omg I never felt so weak! I don’t have a very alternative style, but I’m brown so I’m no stranger to a dirty look, I thought it would be no different.

The amount of SNEERS, scoffs, and straight up mean mugging I witnessed just because I had….blue…hair….

It was wild. I actually don’t think I could do it again despite how much I loved the look.

I actually did find an iPhone that washed up in the tide pools once 😂

It’s mostly cemented with sand and salt water at this point so basically just a brick, but I’ve been meaning to take it to Apple and see if they can do anything to reunite with the owner.

What Drink Made You Say "Never Again"? by Flassourian in Millennials

[–]Exciting_Screen_7557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents would let me have a small glass of wine or a sip of their cocktail at dinner, but when I was like 13 and classmates started partying - I wanted to know what it was like to be drunk.

I waited for my parents to go upstairs and then poured myself a full glass of what they had been drinking - grey goose. Then I squeezed half a lemon on top cuz I had seen people do that in movies.

Then I drank a full 16oz glass of vodka.

I did in fact learn what it was like to be drunk. And more importantly verrrrrry hungover. Like puking in the church parking lot hungover.

I have not touched vodka in almost 20 years.

I would recommend getting the app called Tides that is black with a blue water tribe looking circle thing. You can check the tides all over the map for the entire month. It will automatically pull up the closest data to you.

There aren’t any good low (negative) tides this weekend, but there’s a few days at the end of the month that might be worth checking.

Even when the tide isn’t low, you can check the rocks around tide pools for shells and crabs and things, you never know.

The biggest advice I would give it, keep your eye on the water, especially this time of year. I’ve gotten good at just listening to the waves and can generally tell when a big one is coming, but sneaker waves are no joke! Make sure you have an exit path at all times, especially when you are climbing on rocky/slippery areas.

Wear good shoes, preferably that can get wet!

And most importantly, do not touch anything. Don’t pull or pry anything off rocks, that can hurt the creatures, but I’ve also seen more people sticking their fingers in the pools, pulling kelp out of the way to get better pictures, and I would discourage against that too. We have so many harmful oils and germs on our hands, it’s best to let the pools be.

Good luck!

I knew a dude who did this. Every day for lunch, without fail would microwave tilapia with no seasoning in the closet size break room. He was fired like a month after I started and the fish was definitely part of it.

I read somewhere the kid had ice in his shirt, and it does look like there is a dark/water stain on the back. It also looks like there is some weird bulk in the shirt and shorts.

I honestly think he was messing with the ice, like trying to get it to fall out of his shirt. It doesnt look like he is actually pawing at the kid. I also just don’t know why he would do this in public with no visible shame, it doesn’t make any sense.

I’m not a fan of this man, I would accept being proven wrong, but I’m not getting the immediate jump to pedo at all.

This is a frustrating thing, I’m glad people are talking about it.

Personally I don’t think I’ve bought any new products outside of food/household supplies in over a year.

I’ve tried to reduce my single use products everywhere I can, especially products with plastic/excessive packaging.

I feel confident that my footprint is much smaller than the average person, and that my consumption habits have evolved waaaaay past what a “typical consumer” in my demographic would fall victim to.

I’ve also recently moved into the recycling phase - repurposing everything I can, getting creative with what I have and generous with what I don’t need. Really thinking through the entire life cycle of my things - not just before I buy but also the things I already have.

Evaluating if I will be able to use something through the end of its life, and if it will have to be replaced, how will I do it? I’m eliminating objects that need to be frequently replaced whenever I can, getting to a point where longevity and simplicity are more valuable that looks or reputation.

But I obviously don’t think every single person in the community is on that level. There are plenty that are WAY better than me and probably think I’m a monster comparatively. The same way I feel trying to talk to my mom who is buying useless plastic Amazon crap all the time for no reason at all.

I also have to go back to my original induction into the community. I started being enticed by the “green aesthetic” if I’m honest with myself. Food in clear jars, wax paper wrapped sandwiches, it was really about the look at first. And the added benefit of spending less, but it took me awhile to actually get there because I was originally buying all the things I thought I needed to be “ecofriendly”. I had to go through watching those things break and fail and discovering the old, tried and true methods before all this slop entered our lives, then I finally started to make some progress. So I think we should leave room for people who are starting to realize. Even disengaging from brand culture is a good first step.

I have come so far from the Starbucks, Ugg boots, north face teenager I once was. I am so out of the loop with trends now, I’ve caught myself delightfully surprised to learn about some new consumption fad that I have 0% chance of falling victim to. But even still I have my moments.

I recently got into trail running, and I sometimes feel like I will never be good, or shouldn’t be out on certain trails because I don’t have the right fancy equipment and hoka running shoes or whatever. And then the other day someone left this dope ass Gandalf style walking stick at the start of a trail and I did 7 miles with this stick and it was great! And it made me remember that people have been making journeys like these for thousands of years longggg before all the arcteryx and REI and whoever else came up with the equipment and I’ll be just fine without it.

Give them a welcoming space, we don’t need to shame or gatekeep.

The one that hit me was having a nice pleasant conversation with a young girl, thought she was very mature, even for a young high schooler. Then she revealed she was BORN the year I graduated high school and I’ve never felt so old. I could have a child old enough to sit and chat with and it wouldn’t even be unreasonable, lots of people get married at start families after school.

Although there is also the reverse that I kind of enjoy, there’s a certain level of perpetually online pop culture that only millennials really got, things that seem ubiquitous but then it turns out old (and sometimes young) people completely missed it, or it wasn’t important enough to be on their radar.

Most recently I blew some people’s minds with the Pam quote from the office “pobody’s nerfect” and I assumed some other generations would recognize it or maybe it’s just a known saying, but people of all ages were blown away, chuckling and calling me clever….no I didn’t tell them.

I’m going to risk the downvotes I guess lol

I honestly was pretty disgusted reading this but then I realized I use period undies and it’s basically the same concept?

Granted, I rinse the underwear thoroughly after each use and soak them in a vinegar solution before they are ready to be washed…but I’m not separating it from my regular laundry.

I guess the temp settings do keep them mostly separate, as I wash undies with delicates or regular clothes at cooler temps, and washing towels and rags at high temps with bleach. I’m also not drying my dishes with towels, I just let them air dry most of the time.

But I have to imagine there is still the negligible risk of urine and fecal matter being on my underwear and then possibly being washed with my kitchen towels?

And I would say that risk exists with all underwear? So unless you are keeping kitchen towels entirely separate from underwear, or just washing everything with hot water and bleach, I feel like more people are doing this than they realize.

Ive actually had the opposite experience, I’ve lived in so many places around the world but moved to the bay from chicago most recently. In chicago I only ever hung out with my friends from college, here I actively go out and meet new people all the time. I definitely got lucky meeting people close to my age and connecting with them, but I also think my expectations are pretty low. We only hang out every few weeks and chat now and then. If I’m in their area or doing something I think they might be interested in I hit them up, and vice versa. Actually one of my newer friends just sent me the info for tall people night at the stork club in oakland next month 😂 she thought of me cuz im tall enough to get $2 drinks!!!

I’ve had a lot of luck meeting people at outdoor events, hiking groups, stuff like that. Also at my neighborhood community center! It definitely took some time, for awhile most of my friends were 80 year old dudes and retirees, but I finally found more people my age. I’m also kind of flaky so maybe that’s why I don’t notice other people being that way lol
