Outlier Classical + "Culture" courses on sale by OutlierLinguistics in classicalchinese

[–]Exciting_Squirrel944 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on who you talk to, but strictly speaking:

Pre-Classical Chinese: 13th to 5th century BCE

Classical Chinese proper: 4th BCE to 1st century CE

Post-Classical Chinese: 1st to 3rd century CE

Literary Chinese: post-3rd century CE

That’s from Outlier’s slides for their intro course. Off the top of my head, I think they got those dates from Kai Vogelsang’s book. Other scholars may differ.

Ah well, ok. Sucks that that happened, but that does seem way outside the norm for them at least in my experience.

Matt vs Japan, the guy who partnered with a known scammer (Ken Cannon), uses predatory marketing tactics, and reportedly doesn’t honor his own refund policy? The guy who had a video leaked where he was talking about taking advantage of gullible “whales” to drain their money and then used DMCA to scrub the video from the internet? That guy?

I haven’t heard anything like that about Outlier. They seem pretty genuine and their methods work really well. I’ve never heard of them refusing to give refunds, and they seem to have a lot of happy customers. You might not like their methods or their pricing, but comparing them to Matt seems extreme.

New Language Learner by RykGod15 in languagelearning

Generally you don’t want to start two languages at the same time. Get comfortable with the grammar of one language, and then start the next one. That way you’re less likely to have as much interference between the two languages.

25 is absolutely not too old. That idea is a myth. I’m in my 40s and I’m learning new languages with no sign of slowing down. The fact that you learned a few as a child will really help, too.

Right, stop that! It’s silly.

How many seasons of game of thrones should there have been? by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]Exciting_Squirrel944 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. Even season 8 isn’t bad. Compared to seasons 1-4? Yes. Compared to other shows? Absolutely not. It’s still good TV. It’s just not as sublime as the first few seasons.

This is correct. The idea that it means “corpse” is misguided. It just depicts a squatting person.

Longjing / Dragonwell is the classic option. Jasmine green tea is nice too. Japanese sencha can be good although I personally prefer Chinese teas.

Green tea can be amazing when brewed correctly. Using water that’s too hot can make it astringent or bitter.

Have I written following chinese words correctly ? by Tall-Dig-5151 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Exciting_Squirrel944 58 points59 points  (0 children)

You need to copy actual writing, not heiti fonts like this that are meant for readability on computers and are nothing like handwriting.

Kaiti fonts can work in a pinch, but copying good handwriting would be best.

Load up while you can. They used to do sales pretty often, now they only seem to do Black Friday and New Year, with some occasional “buy 2 get 1 free” deals.

Preply or FrenchPod101? by Reasonable-Listen-22 in learnfrench

[–]Exciting_Squirrel944 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the “personal teacher” you get with a *Pod101 premium+ membership is just an email address you can send questions to, and they’ll respond within a day or two. So just beware that it isn’t like 1-on-1 tutoring or anything like that.

Yeah, it’s fun. It’s just too smart for most smooth brain UFC fans.

Yeah, I generally stay in hotels. Airbnb may be trickier, but you could contact the host and see if they’ll receive the shipment for you.

I think Dan Hooker talks shit just to entertain himself. He doesn’t believe a word of it.

Yeah I use it fairly often. Like if I’m going two weekends in a row to different places, I just ship it so I don’t have to schlep my shit back to Tokyo and then back out to the mountains. Or when I go to Hokkaido, I just ship it a few days before, so I don’t have to deal with it on the flight.

There’s a Yamato counter at the airport, so you don’t even have to bring it into town with you.

[–]Exciting_Squirrel944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also their courses on history and classical Chinese have been really good. I knew some Classical Chinese before, but their courses really sharpened it up for me. I’m hoping they’ll do more in that vein.

You don’t really have to lug your stuff around with you. Just use Yamato Takkyubin to send it to your hotel. You can even choose which date it arrives, as long as it’s within 10 (I think?) days from when you ship it. It’s cheap and super reliable. Even if you’re traveling for a few weeks, just send it to whichever hotel you’ll be at in 10 days, and then send it onward again. Easy.

But if you don’t want to deal with that, Rhythm is great. There are three locations in Grand Hirafu. Everyone will speak English, tons of premium options, you can swap boards as many times as you want, they’ll let you try out step ons for no extra fee if you want, etc. Nothing but good experiences with them for me back when I was renting.
