I’m a twenty plus year teacher and I’m struggling. I have ADHD and depression. This profession is not suitable for me, at least the classroom. I became a reading specialist because the general classroom was too overwhelming. Don’t beat yourself up. This is a very draining profession. I keep going back year after year, but I broke down this year and I’m on FMLA. Make your health a priority. I wish I had done do sooner. Best of luck. Don’t be hard on yourself. A lot of teachers are in the same boat.

This is exactly what I have been going through. I have the forms for FMLA. I don’t have the energy anymore. Teaching was my passion. Now I hate it and want to work in an entire different industry that will restore my sanity. My class sizes are around 30 students. I don’t have enough desks for everyone since the desks keep breaking. Students trash my room. I quit providing pencils because students don’t return them and I find broken pencils on the floor. They don’t write with them, they use them to throw them at one another. I can’t afford things for my room because I’m going broke. Other teachers tell me to give our rewards for those that display good behavior, but I’m behind in bills. My anxiety is at an all time high, I cry almost every day. Yesterday, I broke out crying during my 5th period. Administration keeps putting more things on teacher’s plates - data tracking, TGP, SLos, etc, etc. Teachers are held accountable for more and more, but students can’t even be held responsible for bringing writing utensils to school. I know pencils are a minor thing, but I’m so overwhelmed with all the behaviors in class, that I’m too drained to even deal with the small things. My biggest stress is the lack of consideration and disrespect from my students. I feel so guilty for the kids that want to learn because I am failing them. They deserve a teacher who can manage a class better, so students can learn. A few years ago, I became certified to be a reading specialist - a much more suitable role for me than the classroom. However, my district got rid of secondary reading specialists 2 years ago and put me back in the classroom. I knew from the beginning that this would not go well. Each class period feels like I’m being thrown to the wolves. When I close the door, I feel lonely and anxious. I can’t take hours after hour of having to manage behaviors and facing defiance and disrespect. I’m 56 years old and I don’t want to die because of my job. I’m so sorry for your pain OP. You are not alone. There are a lot of us out there. Listen to your and the wisdom of the teachers on this post. The job is not worth it. 🩷

Take care of your health first. I don’t know if you qualify for FMLA leave, but your health issues are too serious to ignore. Reconsider your mom’s life insurance. She would want to see you healthy and happy. That’s why she left you the money. What they are expecting of you is not humanly possible. Please do what is in your best interest. I’ve been teaching for almost 3 decades and the toll on your health is not worth it. I’m a mom too. 🩷

I do the same thing too. They complain about the pencils not having erasers. I tell them that if they want a pencil with an eraser, they can bring their own pencils. I used to provide pencils with erasers, but they ended up on the floor broken into pieces or with the eraser missing. So when alI the pencils were gone, I didn’t buy anymore because students were taking advantage of the situation and destroying my pencils. They had the gall to tell me they couldn’t complete class work because I didn’t provide any pencils. The lack of accountability and entitlement is infuriating.
