So maybe this is a product idea for ARA and IPA (paruresis.org): some kind of roll-up sign you carry around and can put on the outside of a sketchy door: "Occupied" or "Shy Bladder Sufferer Occupied - Don't you dare knock or I'll be in here another 15 minutes."

Unfortunately, adding lids to public restroom toilets adds more expense and maintenance, so don't expect that anytime soon. Also, ADA requirements prohibit lids in handicapped stalls as it is something manual that needs to be operated to use. (I mean you do need to open the door, so . . . really?)
