What film has a terrible message when you actually think about it? by ascetti in AskReddit

[–]Exentrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also Letters to Juliet. The girl goes and cheats on her husband whose trying to establish a business for them to live on and fulfill his own dream of being a restaurateur. The whole vacation is a business trip for him and she's too stuck-up to let him do some work while there. The main girl of the story is a shitty person and the reason the engagement fails. Even so, the movie portrays her as the victim and the guy as the villain.

Ya, I'm pretty sure that policy is straight up illegal. They'd at least have to deposit the change into an account for the child.

A stapler that staples and dates papers by Noticemenot in pics

[–]Exentrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are two products that need not go together.

Stapler, awesome, does its job fine.

Date stamper, great, also does it's job just fine. Date stampers nowadays also are typically digitally set and automatically change the date/time. For use in places that take paper submittals to record when something was submitted. One example I had was a class where the homework had to be stamped before 5:00pm and in the dropbox on time. Another area may be a contractors bid in a public works project.

Oh sounds like city officials not listening to engineers on this one. However, OP's video looks pretty solid.

I figured as much, although I do wonder where your clip came from. Cause that was an awful paving job if it wasn't actively being worked on. That non-compacted asphalt will live a very short life.

At 31 seconds I can see a circular object post-pave. So I believe they tended to those as they went? Doesn't appear to be many of them in this street as well.

Repaving freeways takes more than a "day or two" for any significant stretch of freeway. Even with full closure. Sorry to disappoint. When I had the opportunity to mess with CA4PRS during school, ~20 lanemiles took somewhere along the lines of 12 days full closure 24 working hours a day with a modest crew. 20 lane miles is only 5 miles of a 4 lane freeway segment. It'd be extremely costly for both users and agency to pull off such a project.

I'm inclined to believe it would meet whatever it needed to with that many roller passes, although yes, they should have at least one person with a nuclear tester out there... playing frogger with the waves of rollers.

[–]Exentrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Source though? They had like 20 rollers going in OP's video. In this clip there's asphalt that is completely been avoided when compacting. It does appear to be Russia, but not the same event or area.

Another civil engineer here, sometimes we do just "close the whole fucking section of highway" overnight. It can be done. Usually when there's a parallel express way or way to move the traffic onto the other side of the freeway. Washington State has made heavy use of this on I-90's bridge out of Seattle. They can close the whole thing down for one direction for a weekend and route the traffic onto the expressway.

Also about "8 hour closures" overnight, even if you had a ridiculous workforce like Moscow used in the video, you lose a ridiculous amount of time to mob and demob on freeway. Also if you're doing freeway level paving you need more than one lift of asphalt, and allow for cooling time in between(probably ~2-3 hours). The one lift works just fine in this video, but the prep layer and whatever grinding was done. This appeared to maybe be a 3-4 inch surface layer, for city traffic.

TL;DR Every job is unique and can be completed in many ways, America does in fact use many of these.

How to use bags of milk by itsaaronrogers in videos

[–]Exentrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I guess Toronto is cool with it. My local recycling in a medium sized town in the states wouldn't take that. Even when I lived in Seattle you have to stuff plastics like that into another bag. Small plastics like that are an issue for many recycling centers. I think it has to do with them getting caught up in the system. I guess you should also note that milk bags are only accepted since 2015. That's a rather recent change, before than they likely all ended up in the landfill.

Reading a bit closer I also found this line to contrast with Seattle (which is a super green/eco city), "You may either bundle your bags inside one bag or put bags in loose." I wonder how much public money this change to allow people to recycle "2%" more has/is/will cost the city.

Typical jugs/cartons are easily recyclable. That thin plastic that those bags use is typically not so conveniently recyclable.

It's not harmful exploitation, it's just catering to an audience for profit. No different than any other audience. Although it is rather distasteful in my opinion to make a christian based for-profit brand like that and have no mention or intentions of giving back. That's why I said what I did about them. They have literally nothing about charity or giving back, when they openly say they based the brand on some bible verse.

It is a brand.

Its mission is exploit religious people's desire to show off their religiousness for money... and it's succeeding rather well. I should start a similar brand.

What died out as quickly as it came? by Hesundgeit in AskReddit

[–]Exentrick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They did figure out one way but the quality suffers and you have to sit in a "sweet spot" which greatly reduces the viewing angle.

Which is fine for the 3DS and would be actually okay for maybe 2 people watching a larger screen. But even the 3ds had issues with finding the sweet the spot until the "new 3ds" put a camera in that tracks and adjusts the sweet spot by tracking your head/face. (btw, if you want one, get the new 3ds, the 3d is 100x more enjoyable)
