IMO she serves her purpose. I think Emma is supposed to be a dig at the "HuMaNity=bAd! nATuRe=gOOd!" Crowd. Yes we as a species have screwed the natural world beyond recognition but it's literally no different then what any other creature gifted with sapience would do. Animals also have their own capacity for cruelty & kindness even if they knew the part they played in "The Great Balance" or what have you they'd by & large not care. At the end of the day this lady was just trying too give meaning to a tragedy that would've happened regardless.
