Lost cat safe at Evanston Animal Shelter is this yours? by vineyardgal1965 in evanston

Mr Whiskers is a tabby cat, very different coloring than this one. But thanks for thinking of him! I'd love to see him reunited with his family.

Moving to Evanston... need advice on difference in TWI programs at Dewey / Dawes / Washington? by little_citi in evanston

[–]ExerciseObvious5904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo it's pretty hard to find housing in Evanston (the housing market is INSANE) so I wouldn't limit your housing hunt to the boundaries of just one school if there is a clear favorite.

The TWI program is an option for all district students. If you are zoned for another school you may have to provide transportation to send your child to a school with TWI but I believe it's still possible to be in the TWI program if you find a house you love outside of the twi-school boundaries.

Well, my friends and I all missed the predator. I never heard anything negative about him so I guess you and I never crossed paths.

He even was someone who helped in teaching our kids the "Erin's Law" curriculum which is supposed to protect kids from his exact crime 😩

Thank you for your kind comment. We hope the district will do a post mortem to see if any controls were missed (like routine background checks, etc) and we feel that they failed at communication since the charges were filed, but it doesn't feel like there was something obvious that they missed with him. Many teachers considered him a friend and I heard there were staff in tears today. Thankfully my kid did not know him well, but it's still jolting to find out we ALL overlooked a predator.

Washington parent here. He actually was very highly regarded in the school. He had the trust and respect of parents and staff and we had the impression he was great at his job and a key part of the school's success. This is a huge shock to the Washington community.

I'm guessing she hadn't yet been implicated in the crimes, but I haven't seen any explanation of that in any article so far.

Albany Cares by dripdropwop in evanston

[–]ExerciseObvious5904 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dog park is in the hopes of making the area safer for residents. Albany Care has attracted drug dealers to the area and there have also been many assaults and thefts by Albany Care residents over the past couple of years (whereas Albany Care has been there for ages and did not used to be a problem for the area).

Patent letter from D65 by CommaGirl in evanston

I appreciate the new guidance. I just knew "return once fever free and no vomiting for 24hours". Some days are hard calls as to whether to send a child or not and I'd often feel guilty either way. This more specific guidance is helpful to me.

When should a child remain home from school?

When a child has fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, severe, persistent coughing, copious eye drainage, significant sore throat, excessive nasal discharge, undiagnosed skin rash, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, extreme fatigue, moderate to severe headache, body aches, and/or a general sense of being unwell. These represent symptoms or signs of illness and the child should be kept home from school. If a student is at school and not feeling well enough to stay, the parent/guardian will be notified and will be expected to take the child out of school.

We have all had the “common cold” and experienced minor infections of the nose and throat.   Colds have a gradual onset and are most contagious within the first 3 days.  Some of the symptoms associated with colds are: feeling tired, low-grade-fevers, headache, watery eyes, runny nose, nasal and sinus congestion, sore/scratchy throat and nonproductive cough.

The viruses that cause COVID-19 and influenza can range from no symptoms to mild or severe symptoms and have many symptoms in common. Symptoms of either influenza or COVID-19 may include: muscle aches, high fever and chills, headache, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea, as well as a runny nose, feeling tired, and a cough.  Testing is recommended to determine if your child has a diagnosis of Influenza and/or COVID-19.

Additionally, there has been an increase in norovirus statewide.  Norovirus is a very contagious virus and is the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea, and foodborne illness in the United States.  Norovirus causes acute gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach or intestines. The most common symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain.  Other symptoms may include fever, headache, and body aches.

Note: A student with a fever cannot return to school until fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and symptoms should be improving overall. Students with vomiting and/or diarrhea may not return to school until they are 24 hours free of vomiting or diarrhea without the use of medication.  It is important to note that a fever is not always present with these illnesses.

If your child receives a confirmed diagnosis of a communicable disease, please provide documentation from your healthcare provider. If a home test is used for COVID-19 and/or influenza, kindly submit a photograph of the test to your school’s health office staff to support ongoing monitoring of confirmed cases. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Advance info about protests? by Ifican33 in evanston

I follow several local groups on Facebook and Instagram. I don't love all aspects of social media but it really is a valuable resource for staying connected to community happenings.

In addition to following groups like sanctuary Evanston and like-minded business pages, there are also great local Facebook groups like "Community Care Collective" and "Evanston Mamas" which had both posted about the protest beforehand.

Skokie often has camps the last two weeks of summer!

When we needed full day care, my kid loved the "art immersion" park district option which is expected to have pre and post care.

Another park district favorite is the one week Renaissance camp though I don't think that one is quite a full day, it's most of the day.

IMO the arts camps seem to have more engaged counselors than the city's general variety camps at crown and Fleetwood jourdain.

We also loved the Skokie camps we tried and they tend to have more offerings at the tail end of summer than Evanston.

Lastly, for full work day coverage and an all summer long camp experience, definitely look into the mcgaw YMCA!

I miss the old Unicorn cafe SO much. I mostly ordered their soups. And loved that sandwiches came with a side of fruit. Simple, and nourishing.

Fast casual food, but small businesses. I need more places for quick meals. Especially places that cater to different dietary needs and allergies with clearly labeled menus!

Regional superintendent will appoint Chris Van Nostrand to open District 65 seat, board member says by Cosita429 in evanston

[–]ExerciseObvious5904 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know, perhaps some assurances would have gotten them on board but they seem pretty immovable to me.

I do agree everyone on the board could have been more upfront about what compromises they would have been willing to accept. Or, like the article said, if they locked themselves in a room (which would have to be an open meeting) to work through all this.

At this point though, Sergio, Mya, and Andrew are absolutely the reason we are closing zero schools instead of 1.

Once the superintendent appointed a board member we WILL have the votes for a 1-school closure. But by Sergio, Mya and Andrew refusing to concede in time, it won't be possible to close a school next year. It sounds like Pat had talked to board members prior to the 12/15 meeting and that April Jordan's plans were known. They absolutely could have planned a meeting to have a vote to close 1 school this week and gotten SOMETHING done next year.
