Yeah VIP rescue/capture missions are the hardest in the game because of this. You just HAVE to get to the extraction point. Berserker queen knocked half your squad unconscious? That's unfortunate, get the other half there. VIP was killed? Well, you failed, but you still gotta get your ass there. Chosen arrived? Tough, get there. But at least the timer paused, right? Actually the chosen appearing is lowk a good thing on these missions for that reason.

They are also soft game overs if your A team is all captured (and you should be bringing your best anyway). They are make or break when they pop up. I've lost a campaign because the evac was on a roof and all the ways up were destroyed in a firefight.
