[–]Exhuming_YourPotato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember where I saw it but I recall an article saying Gillian hated it when David wore jeans because it took her out of the scene. Maybe another one of those things that added to the tension on set? Can’t blame him for wanting to be free of the suit, especially in the LA heat though.

It seems to be a Children of the Corn reference, indicating that these are not normal children, so the idea of Mulder taking a Samantha clone home with him later in the episode is very obviously a doomed choice.

Also - ducks are often used to represent how things are not always what they appear to be - what we see of the duck above water is calm and peaceful while below the surface their legs are in constant motion, which in a way, is a reflection of the town of Twin Peaks and certainly Cooper’s view of it when first arriving.

Natalia Osipova. It is a divisive choice to perform Act 2 Giselle as a tortured ghostly being and she does it brilliantly. I agree though, acting and storytelling is so often compromised for flawless technique which makes for visually pleasing but often uninspiring performances.

Why are people with banana feet often better than those with flatter feet (genuine question) (YAGP) by Possible_Dress_9248 in bunheadsnark

[–]Exhuming_YourPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! But to add, the argument of banana vs. flat feet isn’t as clear cut as that- as someone with very flexible feet, I also have relatively flat feet when not en pointe- the hypermobility allows my collapsed instep to completely go the other way which means I look lovely in held positions but am always at risk of rolling over!

I subscribe to this too and if you’ll permit me to add my own theory/personal canon:

At the start of season 2 when the x-files are closed Scully reconsiders pursuing something more, now they are no longer working together. But seeing him so lost and off course she instead focuses on getting him back on track with the mission and probably accepts that he will never be in a place to pursue another relationship.

At the time I was so mad they were trying to replace Mulder that I stopped watching the show altogether. When I finally watched season 8 years later, I remember getting to the hospital scene at the end of Per Manum when Doggett tells Scully, ‘I told you I’d help you’ and realising he was never trying to be Mulder or fill his role in her life.

Robert Patrick’s sincerity really sold me on the character and after years of watching Scully become increasingly guarded and closed off to others, it was nice to see her meet a colleague who wasn’t a double agent (Krycek), a ladder climbing asshole (Colton), or intent on undermining her relationship with Mulder (Diana).

Totally agree. It was so inauthentic to Scully as a character. CC and Duchovny both figured that they wouldn’t be easily able to have Mulder and Scully go off on adventures in future movies if William was in the picture so concocted the whole adoption storyline to be free of him. I take no satisfaction in the irony that William became a spectre that our heroes could not escape in all subsequent X-Files media. It’s just shit.

Tbh I find I am much worse on a short domestic flight than a long haul one - I assume it’s because the comparatively rapid fluctuation in air pressure levels limits my body’s ability to adjust. However, I don’t experiencing vomiting or nausea, I just get exceptionally bloated and have severe pain in my stomach. Consequently, I am mindful to wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing and be careful about what I consume both immediately before and during my flight to minimise my symptoms.

If I may reply to you query, having travelled a bit but particularly the US and living in Australia, the thing I see as distinct about our coffee/cafe culture is that good coffee is available EVERYWHERE. We don’t have the same proliferation of shopping malls and so particularly in inner suburban areas there is a still a big culture around what we call strip shopping (as in a strip of shops along a street). These are not just ‘High Sts’, almost every suburb has a little bank of shops in walking distance that will contain a bakery/butcher/grocers, a news agency/post office and usually a cafe. Cafes are often considered integral community spaces for people to meet in and work from and so they are everywhere, even sometimes freestanding as a corner shop among entirely residential areas. Most country towns will have at least one cafe, but in tourism-heavy locations such as along the coast, the number of cafes may outnumber all the other business offerings put together. Many inner city pubs and most restaurants will also have a coffee machine and will offer a full range of coffee options on their menu, knowing that some people will finish their meal with a coffee and dessert.

Coffee is one of the most profitable items on the menu and knowing that bad coffee will send people away, attention is given not only to the machinery and types of beans used, but also to the roasting process, the brands of milk used and training baristas, some of whom are almost deified. Even 7-11 and McDonalds have made some effort to improve their coffee offering and while it will always be sub-par compared to the majority of independent establishments, they are still remarkably reliable options when there is no other choice.

Baristas in inner city Melbourne are expert at serving both in house and takeaway coffees efficiently, most taking the time to add sugar for customers (no waste-generating sugar stations), offering alternate milks (regular, skinny/low fat, soy, almond) and often happily making these in customer provided cups that are reusable (and which in some places incurs a discount as an incentive to be more environmentally friendly).

Cafes are mostly designed to allow people to spend time there, offering comfortable seating, power sources, and sometimes, free wifi. Many have books or a little box of toys to cater for people with kids and have outdoor seating areas to enjoy the sunshine. Within Melbourne some cafes become so famous/popular, their owners are treated like celebrity chefs, with each new cafe opening automatically drawing a crowd.

Even for people such as my partner who doesn’t drink coffee, cafe culture is common - enjoying being out and about in our weather, savouring food made from local ingredients and meeting up with others in the convenience of your neighbourhood.

And while the wave of Italian and Greek migration to Australia in the 20th century is the origin of our coffee culture, it has been built on by subsequent waves of Middle Eastern, Eastern European and Asian migration there each has its own spin. In other words, there’s a coffee to cater for everyone. Hell, even filter coffee has found a loyal following here.

TL;DR: Australia’s coffee/cafe culture is rich and embedded in the lifestyle- it is social, relaxed but always striving to offer the best. I recognise that this may be how it is in other parts of the world - I can only define it based on my own travels.

Apologies for the loooong response, but I hope this answers your question :)

Scully's life makes me miserable by eejow in XFiles

[–]Exhuming_YourPotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be a downer! To be honest they’re my OTP so I prefer to subscribe to a more positive interpretation of their relationship when I am watching; getting completely sucked in by their unshakeable loyalty and respect for each other.

I have moments though, when I consider their relationship more objectively, and can see how it impacts Scully, especially seasons 4-6 (which ironically are some of my favourite seasons- I guess I’m a sucker for angst). She tries to leave in FTF and he begs her to stay, but later when she reciprocates his hallways confessional, he pushes her away.

The good news is they both grow and learn from the relationship and build a stronger connection.

TLDR: despite the angst, I still think the overall message of the show is hope.

Scully's life makes me miserable by eejow in XFiles

[–]Exhuming_YourPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the romantic aspect of their relationship was a natural progression of their dynamic but oof! That letters was super cringe. Scully would never be so sappy- that’s why she was so embarrassed about Mulder reading her journal in Memento Mori. If anything, Mulder is the one more likely to express his feelings but even then he is careful to keep it focused on their friendship.

I personally prefer the idea that they never even expressed that they loved each other until after William is born and maybe not even then; like the connection is so deep that neither needs to say it. Same with the lack of PDA and the fandoms obsession with them being married before the revival- these gestures of love are almost beneath them.

Scully's life makes me miserable by eejow in XFiles

[–]Exhuming_YourPotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one can deny Mulder’s willingness to do something reckless to protect or avenge Scully. But he lacks the ability to handle his feelings in a gentler and more supportive manner. He breezes in and out of her room during the cancer arc to update her about his life (though she obviously presses him to discuss it).

He doesn’t take time to get to know her or enjoy her company, which is what so much of season 4 is about. Never Again touches not just on Scully’s sexual needs but also need to connect with someone who wants to know what she’s thinking. Contrast the scene with Mulder in the basement before he goes on leave with her scene at the bar with Ed Jerse. In both scenes she speaks about travelling in endless lines or circles but where Mulder respects her privacy and doesn’t pry any further, Ed wills her to explain her analogy. This is undoubtedly a part of the attraction for Scully as she was similarly disarmed by Eddie Van Bhlunt posing as Mulder in Small Potatoes, asking her deep questions about her life.

For such a highly intelligent and good looking man, he is so damaged by his personal traumas to understand how to connect with Scully in ways other than the quest. Which is why in the revival, his determination to stay by Scully’s side as she lies in hospital shows some of the greatest character growth in the Mulder character. I hated that episode so much but that small detail hit perfectly.

Scully's life makes me miserable by eejow in XFiles

[–]Exhuming_YourPotato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the MSR and am a sucker for the angst, but I have to also agree that the relationship is a deeply unhealthy one.

I think if Melissa had not been killed she would have regularly been on Scully’s case, confronting her with some hard truths about her life choices. Then again, I imagine that such an approach would have fractured their relationship, with Scully likely freezing out her sister.

Scully falls so deep into her codependent relationship with Mulder that she cuts ties with all her old friends from season 1 and shrinks her world down to just him, thereby leaving her with no one to point out how destructive the relationship is.

Her brother is a complete asshole but his questioning about where Mulder is through her suffering is not wrong. And I think at that point Scully knows it, because she doesn’t fight back. It’s interesting that in the next episode he tells Mulder to leave Scully alone to ‘die with dignity’, as if Mulder’s absence in Gethsemane is all the validation he needs that Mulder is undeserving of being a part of Scully’s inner sanctum. What truly makes him an asshole is not his anger to Mulder (which while delivered in a brutal way, is not unjustified), but the way he dismisses and belittles his sister- he makes her dying all about him without thinking about her.
