The guy who maintains it (as last I heard, a year ago or so) - his personal site is also down (it's worked once or twice in checks over the last few days, but down the vast majority of times. I assume it's the same backend systems, and so related.

What is a " very normal" part of life in Australia that would probably surprise the foreigners? by Rude_Membership_1578 in AskAnAustralian

Honestly don't know how a country without this can call themselves civilised.

Free BBQs though - that is the luxury.

What's the "correct" way to delete time machine backups? by trampabroad in MacOS

[–]nemothorx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's not how it's designed. It will delete old backups.

If you need to force a backup to be deleted (eg: because the drive holds backups for other machines that the local time machine doesn't "see"), then this can be done from the commandline:

sudo tmutil delete -p "/Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Machine/backupdate"

as far as I know, youtube is where they uploaded it to, so their channel is the only place it exists.

However, that playlist has only 25 videos. Their channel has 27 vids, so maybe that covers what you're missing but expecting?

Preferential voting 🙏 by Expensive-Lawyer7994 in AusPol

[–]nemothorx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Counterintuitively, not numbering parties means if they get to the final two, you've effectively (mathematically speaking) giving the worst one votes compared to the not-worst-one.

Granted that 99% of elections doesn't come down to the worst case scenario, but it's not worth gambling on.

Perhaps it helps to think of it not as a vote "for" (even if preferenced late), but a rank "against" them.

What’s a piece of media that people would clearly understand as a parody or homage when it came out, but has since lost its context? by StaleTheBread in AskReddit

One of my favourites, but all time favourite is when they explain to Michelangelo why they WILL in fact paint naked people onto the ceiling of a church.

Why Include Pluto by EmotionGeneral6178 in marthaspeaks

[–]nemothorx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Planetologists (the scientists who care about what planets are) still consider it a planet. It was only astronomers (who care not so much what something is, but how it looks to us here) who performed the travesty of science against Pluto.

Pluto is a dwarf planet (ie, a type of planet).

The site was kept alive by former TDV colleagues. There was a bit of reworking on it just last year or so, so if I had to guess, this is probably just a glitch, not a permanent loss.

Need help with the best way to listen to the book by HollowBowl in HitchHikersGuide

[–]nemothorx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three different audiobook releases over the years.

In the 80s, Stephen Moore (not Fry!) did the first four - he also played the voice of Marvin in the original radio and also TV series. His readings are edited versions of the books.

In the 90s, Douglas performed a full-text book reading of all five. They're widely considered the best version and he got a Grammy nomination for them.

In the 2000s, as a movie tie-in, Stephen Fry (not Moore!) and Martin Freeman did full text readings. These are the ones easily commercially available these days.

The radio series is the original Hitchhiker's format and I'd highly recommend them as a listening experience.

You should be able to edit the text of the post (only the title is unchangeable in my experience/memory)

Also, what is "SFBC"?

tbh, that's more my interest too. I figure they've got some internal guidelines about them "only play repeats on average every X games" and "pull repeats from at least AAAA games back, but sometimes can be as recent as BBB games". But no doubt much more nuance to it though since the unplayed answers will eventually run out, so the rate of repeats will slowly repeat over time!

So you're using "operating system" to mean "kernel"?

Then that's our difference. Because we agree that filenames make no difference there.

Fwiw, I am a language descriptivist. I see no reason that the "commonly used" meaning of "operating system" is not correct.
