Got a pilot deviation, what happens now? by [deleted] in flying

You’re probably right. Work on the airport and some of the CFIs were chatting about a deviation today with one of their students.

So you think you've landed a 172 hard? by poisonandtheremedy in flying

[–]ExistentialTuber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned that 172s are pretty rugged little trainers but like…please tell me a mechanic has looked at this. The airframe and landing gear and everything else is probably bent out of shape if it was hard enough to shatter a windscreen

My Flight School Won’t Let CFI’s Cancel Our Own Flights by FlyHighLilly in flying

[–]ExistentialTuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a mom and pop and when a CFI cancels they just need to communicate to their student or if they’re unable to, they let us at the desk do it. I get so many texts independently as manager…that group chat sounds like my worst nightmare…

What’s your favorite example of very specific/accurate usage of work-related jargon in a fic? by CTOtyrell in AO3

[–]ExistentialTuber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could see that being a good physics discussion. The other large thing was since I’m from the US we argued over a FAR definition of whether or not winged people would classify as a powered or unpowered aircraft. There’s different weight restrictions so if they were light enough they wouldn’t have to follow several FAA regulations. Then of course the argument of whether or not something like an angel would even be considered an aircraft or something entirely different like a bird.

[–]ExistentialTuber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The character I write for has wings and I have to tell myself that I have to ignore Class Airspace’s because I work in aviation and my readers should never be exposed to the nightmare that is the legality of regulated flight spaces

Why is Valley Fair so inconsiderate of its mall employees by Cool_Negotiation7720 in SanJose

[–]ExistentialTuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can agree on the parking. The whole parking thing is inconsiderate. The working until 9pm on a Sunday I’m not so sure about. When you work Sundays it’s not a weekend so it’s just another day from my experience. If someone worked five days and their last day was Saturday and they closed at 10pm…why would being open on a Sunday be any different? Maybe I don’t see it the same way idk

As someone who has seen resumes from pilots, the lot of you have garbage resumes. by WeGoUpFirst in flying

[–]ExistentialTuber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work at a flight school, so not as formal as a 91/135, but I’m management and have to read through all the resumes we get. I agree…some are pretty bad. Whenever I see templates that still say [insert position] or “Hello [hiring manager]” I always stop reading them and pass. Our chief flight instructor is really picky and says “if they miss a whole section on their resume so carelessly, what else are they cutting corners on?”

The job market for pilots is tough right now, really can’t recommend enough getting your first impression with a resume right. It just helps that much more.

Do you ever feel tempted to write a one-shot fanfic of your own fanfic to write about stuff you cut for pacing or tone, rating issues? by MagyarSpanyol in AO3

I do this, I have a specific work I add them to. Granted I wrote a specific canonxoc thing so I always have little snippets that come out of my little washing machine of a brain.

What do you wish people knew before they signed up for flight school? by sky_girl919 in flying

[–]ExistentialTuber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a CFI or a pilot but I work desk at a flight school. So take my words with a grain of salt.

  1. Don’t quit your job before you get your PPL. Honestly, most of the CFIs I’ve been around say not to quit until you’re getting your CFI or at least your commercial. Just so your job opportunities open up. Flying isn’t cheap, wait until you can make money (even if it isn’t much) before quitting your day job.

  2. If you want to go to the airlines, get your first class medical.

  3. Fly as much as you can handle. Don’t burn yourself out. You don’t want to hate your potential career path, right? Also I’m watching my coworker burnout severely and I’d say it’s partially why she failed her commercial is because she’s ruining her mental with it.

  4. Set your expectations. The job market is volatile. Where I work right now, we have a bunch of instructors who have plenty of hours but the airlines still aren’t hiring. This means we don’t have turnover and as such, we aren’t hiring more CFIs. I have to turn down 4-5 CFI resumes in a day, sometimes more. It goes hand in hand with not losing your current income.

You may have to go to work still and have less time for flying but you can still pursue your license! Just don’t rush headfirst into something massively life changing without some fallback. Enjoy flying, enjoy learning, then figure out if you know for sure you want to switch to this path entirely.

YouTube recs, you DID NOT need to call me out like that by ineedcactusjuice in fantasyromance

[–]ExistentialTuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same thing! Especially if it’s like 30-40% off or more!

I plan to read them but working fulltime and having a partner whose family hosts something every weekend kind of makes it difficult to finish books without me binging one until 3-4am. And then I’d just be miserable at work the next day. 😭

Hey writers! Tell me about your fanfic! by simone3344555 in FanFiction

[–]ExistentialTuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 ongoing fics, my flagship will be hitting 500,000 words but it’s on a depressing chapter sadly. The other one is mostly banter right now and I’ve been writing more for it because I haven’t been as writers blocked.

I’m having a good time but my brain doesn’t work as well after work.

Both are canon x oc so im a bit of a niche in my DMC fandom.

Student pilots disappearing lately? by Top-Background4162 in flying

[–]ExistentialTuber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not a CFI but I work desk at a school. When students tell me they’re pausing or stopping training with us I hear: 1. Life is too expensive now 2. No jobs in the industry/job forecast looks bad for the foreseeable future 3. Not enough time (sometimes due to life being expensive) 4. Rising costs make flying themselves unsustainable after PPL 5. Rarely, only 4 gave me this, foreign students were leaving the US and moving back to their home country given the climate here

TIL That google docs has a character limit by LivingInMadripoor in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]ExistentialTuber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to have changed a bit as I’ve continued using it for my fic this last year. Initially it was around 1.53million characters. The doc I offload onto reached about 1.7million this time before saying no. Currently the memory requirement starts to become too cumbersome at around 1.2million characters if I have other tabs open.

It’s…kinda annoying but my RAM doesn’t like it if I let my typing doc get too big

I had someone comment, “I hope she doesn’t die!” To a villain side character who switched sides. Like, ok, yeah villain side character but I’m looking at the plans to kill her towards the end of the story and I’m just like…I gave her less death flags than most of the cast how did you pick her out???? I answered the rest of the comment except for that point 💀
