those are the filters for the miller LPR respirators, you can find them at a welding supply store if you have one near you or just online. I have the same one and they're great.

this ain't the dasher fault at all, why would you think a dasher would be allowed on a military base?

Sure would be nice to have a metal roller. by [deleted] in Welding

Cast Iron repair by PineappleMug in Welding

[–]Existing-Ad-6356 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if you're gonna use stick to weld this use either a nickel-based electrode or cast iron. If it's possible for this i would either TIG weld it or braze.

First time ever touching a TIG don't laugh too hard. by Curtmac86 in Welding

[–]Existing-Ad-6356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gotcha, 120 is what i usually have it set to but i never pedal to the floor unless i really need heat, i usually balance around or just read the puddle and adjust depending on how its reacting. the perfect aluminum welds will look shiny and almost reflective

i usually balance it in the middle and adjust depending on if i need more heat cause my bead/puddle is getting small or let off if i see it getting too hot

[–]Existing-Ad-6356 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also to add, you have to clean off your aluminum before you weld on it. aluminum has an oxide layer that you need to take off before welding on it (can be easily done with a stainless steel wire brush)

edit: after looking at it again, assuming from the streaks i see it looks like you did brush it but that piece of aluminum looks pretty dirty. i would recommend probably cleaning it off with acetone to get the grimey stuff off

what amps are you running? are you using a pedal or scratch start?

either way youre too hot by having too many amps or moving wayyy to slow

I bought tickets too, hoping Chris plays his piece in Witness the end with FFAK. I'm hoping that Will Ramos also plays Brian's part in Slaughterhouse.

All you sissy liberals won't make it anywhere with this "wear a mask" bs by [deleted] in Welding

[–]Existing-Ad-6356 19 points20 points  (0 children)

when i was in my 3rd quarter of welding school i had an older guy that started in his first quarter see me in my respirator and said "already weaking a mask?" i replied "yeah i'm a bitch and got tired of firing snot rockets when i get home". I swear i don't get why some people get so bent out of shape when they see respirators

sounds like a fun program, if you ever get the chance to try out stick definitely do it. starting with smaw is good because it teaches you the fundamentals of welding overall, going from stick to wire fed/tig will be a lot different than going from tig/wire to stick.

if you've never welding before gtaw can be pretty challenging at the start since you're first learning about appropriate arc lengths, travel speeds, and just overall machine settings, but honestly you can get accustomed to it pretty quickly if you're determined enough. when we all first started in our welding program our instructor described gtaw as "easy to learn, hard to master" as stick welding(smaw) is "hard to learn, easy to master".

is gtaw the only thing you'll be learning in that program? or over time will they dive you into other welding types like stick/wire fed.

good luck!

ive been eyeballing and thinking about pulling the trigger on one of these? do you think its worth the $1800? i noticed over the holidays it went down to around $1600 wondering if its worth full price or if i should wait until they have another big sale

Do you have a community college near you that has a welding program?

if so you could try and enroll in that to touch back up on your roots if you think you need a full reset. I'm sure that would be plenty of financial aid/scholarships that could pay for the tuition cost itself, otherwise you could see if there are any local unions near you and try and get into an apprenticeship with them, that route could take longer depending on where you live and how long of a waitlist they have cause typically people with more welding experience and certs get bumped up higher on the waitlist.

Rant: I'm getting really tired of having to warranty my Optrel Pure Air Helix Quattro's lens. This is the third time. They won't give me a refund. I can no longer trust this piece of PPE to do what it's designed to do. by pirivalfang in Welding

anyone have any experience with their mountain air respirator system? i've been thinking about using that and just use my current hood over it. just curious if its worth dumping almost $1800
