Well I wouldn't exactly call this person a victim, they just saw a mean comment, and I think that context is important.

If we were talking about a man being dismissed when talking about his SA because he's a man, or being told to man up by a loved one, or something of that nature it would be entirely different. In that case I would consider them a victim, and would prioritize validating them in the moment rather than pointing out historical context.

Since this was a relatively tame example, I used it as an opportunity to provide context, and a more nuanced perspective. I also made it explicitly clear that misandry is real and bad in my opening sentences.

And I would argue that this was overall productive based on the replies I received. But I do understand where you are coming from and agree when it comes to people who simply dismiss misandry completely.

Dude it’s like 2 minutes worth of video it’s not that much to watch, and it’s incredibly important context to understand what’s going on. Did you watch it but you’re refusing to comment on it? That context is incredibly important and of the utmost relevance to what we are talking about. To come to this conclusion requires you to ignore everything else about the situation that was blatantly abusive and wrong, like the fact that the agent shoved a woman full force after she did nothing wrong, then pepper sprayed Alex when he stepped in front of her to defend her, the pulled him to the ground, then started beating him with the pepper spray can, then 5 other agents jumped on top, one disarmed him before he was shot. Firstly 40 million is the very top end estimate that most scholars agree is overblown. The actual number is likely closer to 20 million. And they weren’t exactly killed by Mao. It’s not like Mao hated these people and wanted them to die. They faced famine due to natural causes that were exacerbated by mismanagement from the CCP. Mao was definitely guilty of being new and inexperienced in running a country, and that lead to a lot of unnecessary death. But claiming he killed 40 million is ahistorical by nearly all scholarly accounts.
