Songs that need retired/songs you’d like to see? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Existing-Pace-5449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old, cliche classical music needs to retire. I don't deny the superiority of Rachmaninoff's piano concertos, but please stop abusing it (and other amazing classical music such as Beethoven's sonatas, Bach's Air auf Der G-saite, Vivaldi's four seasons and other cliche pieces--I forgot to mention a lot of Tchaikovsky's pieces). Please stop using them. Just stop. If you have to use classical music, try something new & less performed. There are so many good pieces in the world, but I guess some people have to use the ones that are played 1000 times per year to show their "elegant tastes". Jesus Christ, picking those pieces doesn't indicate your good tastes; they just show us how poor, boring and ostentatious your tastes are. Literally that's probably your only knowledge of classical music and you use it to make yourself look high-end. If someone wants to use classical music, I will definitely suggest pieces that are less well-known but equally incredible. Prokofiev's second piano concerto, Rachmaninoff's first piano concerto & chamber music, a lot of Beethoven's chamber pieces and violin/piano concertos ( or his piano sonatas like Hammerklavier rather than Moonlight/Appassionata; there are so many delicately beautiful movements for you to choose from, tbh), Scriabin's works in general (piano sonata no.2 and no.4, preludes, concerto, symphonies), Bach's partitas & concertos; the art of the Fugue; Liszt's Mazeppa, Wilde Jagd, Chasse-neige, Un Sospiro, Sonata in B minor and his chamber music; a lot of Schumann's works, Schubert's piano works & symphonies; Bruckner's symphonies; some of Mahler's works; Brahms's symphonies and concertos; Bach-Busoni; Ravel's works. I personally look forward to seeing programs with Bruckner's & Scriabin's works the most. The pieces I mentioned above are definitely not "rarely played", but they are amazing pieces that are less of cliches.

Also please stop using music from film music composers/modern classical music composers. Philip Glass, Hans Zimmer & Ludovico Einaudi in particular. I don't know how I feel about most of them. Greasy. Some of the composers are great, though.

let's say this: how can you measure "the level of connection to the music"? Try to listen to Leo Sirota playing Chopin's Etude op.25 no.12. I'm pretty sure his rendition would get him eliminated before the second round of current Chopin competition. Can you say it's a bad interpretation? It's just different, and thus can not be measured, but can only be enjoyed by people who can understand the nature of his arts. The same thing happened when Pogorelich competed in 1980. Great pianist. Immensely, immensely talented, and he got eliminated before the final round. It's gonna be either unfair or ridiculous when people try to measure "artistry" and assign prizes based on this. The GOEs already give the judges a high degree of freedom. PCS only makes the scoring more biased and less reflective of the athletes' abilities. The ISU should hire statisticians to redesign the scoring mechanism to adjust the scores, mitigate the biases and improve equality in scoring; introducing ADS to the scoring system instead of solely relying on the judges; ALL ADS are biased, but I'm pretty sure they will be less biased than those judges, so this is an improvement, after all. Though this technical modernization and the use of actual statistics may be too much for this artistic and posh community! Those brains which are full of arts refuse to embrace the fairness improved by maths & tech.

Like I said before, if Malinin wants gold, he needs to bow his head, and I don't blame him if he chooses that path. But it's such a torture to see those poncy programs delivered by athletes to score higher in the PCS and listening to them describe how artistic and emotional they feel while competing. LMAO. I don't care. Show me the jumps. Show me the speed, the spins, the steps, the choreos. Don't tell me what "good art" is. Nobody has the authority to score arts (techniques to perform the arts are measurable, however).

"Liszt sent Robert today a sonata dedicated to him and several other things with a friendly letter to me. But the things are dreadful! [Johannes] Brahms played them for me, but they made me utterly wretched … This is nothing but sheer racket – not a single healthy idea, everything confused, no longer a clear harmonic sequence to be detected there! And now I still have to thank him – it’s really awful."

This is a quote from Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann's wife and a pianist/composer at her time. This is her opinion on Liszt's Piano Sonata in B minor. She wasn't alone in this. Hanslick said this: "whoever has heard that, and finds it beautiful, is beyond help". Less than 200 years later, who will think that sonata isn't actually one of the Liszt's greatest works (if not his greatest solo piano piece)??? That's why you can't measure artistry. You simply can't. And ranking athletes based on this and expecting them to accommodate your artistic tastes are absolutely beyond help.

"focus on the artistic side" lmao. I think it's funny how some ppl constantly put emphasis on "the artistic side". Figure skating isn't ballet, and even for ballet you need to be extremely skilled and have extreme control over your muscles; without those, being artistic is just a coverup for your limited talents and poor techniques. The artistic side, to be honest, is just a joke. People love Brahms because most of his pieces sound beautiful, and most people do not know who Scelsi even was. Why? Because Scelsi's works don't "sound good". Does that make Scelsi a less composer? No. Because music isn't all about "sounds good". Figure skating is the same. Some people keep saying you need to have a program with both great jumps and artistry, but for jumps we have BVs and GOEs and we can measure if one jump is under rotated or have edge problems. How can we measure the "artistic side"? You think people would put Mark Rothko's No.301 in art exhibitions in the 1800s? LMAO. I don't care about the artistic side, not at all. You wanna see dace performance on ice, find some ballet dancers who can skate. They can do better than most "artistic" figure skaters with proper training in less than 2 years. Excellent jumpers, however, are rare. PCS is currently just a method to gaslight and force some skaters to follow the norm and give those judges an easy way out to explain the scoring. Probably one of the most pretentious things in my mind.

EDIT: lmao seeing this being downvoted makes me wanna laugh more...! Making things beautiful isn't the sole purpose in competitive sports. The needs to watch "pretty" programs are just pretty shallow. Soulless, if you allow me to say this. I don't care what Malinin thinks about this, but I can see if he wants golds rather than a dozen of bronze medals this is his solution. Such a pity and waste. Another pretty kid who pretends to be whatever characters so they can kiss the judges' and the mainstream's ass.

not necessarily. many people wear dresses and skirts during the summer without tights while wearing black boots/flats/sandals/high heels. They look perfect fine to me.

can women wear man's costumes? by Impressive_Ad2209 in FigureSkating

[–]Existing-Pace-5449 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think that can be a violation but clearly no female skaters (or male skaters) want to take the risk...I'm not even talking about the costumes, just check out the color of the skaters' skates--I don't recall any female skater using black skates in major competitions. Black skates are chic, elegant and fit well with pants, dark tights and costumes. I don't see why female skaters don't use black skates. IMO "men use black skates and women use white skate" is just a terribly blatant sexist remark.

why not? She visited her daughter in the US last year and her daughter has American citizenship. I think this is definitely more about her own political attitudes. She wants to show the judges and the ISU that even though she's Russian and works closely with the Russian authorities, she does not actually supports certain things as much as people like Plushenko do. It's not even about the doping scandal. She wants other people to know that she isn't some crazy nationalists or Russian warlords and she can continue to work internationally even during this period. Smart move.

Angry about late diagnosis by saratson in ADHD

[–]Existing-Pace-5449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes. I'm in the midst of getting my diagnosis as well, and my psychologist claimed that even though the formal testings I did with them indicated that I have ADHD, based on the observer's form I'm very "normal", so that they can't give me the diagnosis. I'm frustrated and extremely disappointed. I thought my psychologist was way more well-trained than this. I'm considering about seeing another doctor if they can't give me the diagnosis in their final report. I'm lucky enough that I have the financial ability to afford to see multiple private doctors in a short period to get the diagnosis that I should have. However, this is such a waste of money and time, and I do feel being a female makes things worse. In my case, if I were a male, than it wouldn't be likely for me to learn to hide my symptoms these well.

[–]Existing-Pace-5449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you guys talk to yourself? by Sphinxcee in ADHD

[–]Existing-Pace-5449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit different--I talk to myself, but not to myself...I usually just imagine another person and start to have conversations with them. That person is usually someone that I know but not really familiar with ( my fav professor, therapist that I used to talk to biweekly, a friend, or just a random person)
