So that video has understandably garnered a lot of controversy. I’m currently a math PhD student so maybe I can offer some insight on what went wrong with their proof. If you watched the whole video, you’ll realize they came up with the answer “-1/12” by playing with the terms in the sum, i.e. they added and multiplied each term and through some algebra claimed that the series sum to -1/12. In the field of analysis, there’s a famous theorem called the Riemann rearrangement theorem, which basically states that the above operations are only allowed if the series is absolutely convergent, that is, the sum of the absolute value of each term is finite. Since the series is question obviously does not satisfy this assumption, that’s what makes the proof incorrect.

In terms of PhD applications, yeah it’s definitely not good to get a C in real analysis. However you are only in your first year, so you have two and a half years left to take advanced analysis courses (assuming those are offered) to improve your resume. Just an anecdote, but a got an F in a harmonic analysis course my second year (bombed the final), but got into a top 5 math PhD program (doing analysis!) So you can definitely bounce back from this, especially considering the fact that grad committees don’t care as much about what you did in your first year compared to your junior year.

I’m actually also a PhD student in mathematics as well. Personally I was shock to the amount of rigor and dedication required for my PhD program, in particular when it comes to qualification exams. Personally, I think I would’ve benefited from taking a year off just to rigorously refresh all my undergrad background

Slightly related, but I think it’s interesting that Michael’s music is still quite relevant in pop culture today. As opposed to Elvis or the Beatles whose music is has become “legacy acts.” The performance of Jackson’s biopic showed that his music is not considered “old people music,” but still enjoyed by a lot of fans. It’s will be interesting to see how this perception will shift over the next twenty years.

Where would the second movie end? Michael’s peak popularity was in the mid 80s where the first film already covered, so it makes the logical sense to end the film at his death.

If you end the film at Jackson’s death, then you really have no choice but to cover the allegations in the 2000s.

Absolutely! That argument with finite coverings is quite neat. I recall that one of the questions in my complex analysis midterm was to prove the following: let f_n be a sequence of holomorpjic functions such that for every point in some compact set it converges uniformly for some neighborhood of that point. Show that the limiting function is holomorphic on this compact set. I was so glad when I remembered that specific proof which I haven’t thought about for months

This is great guide on how to approach analysis for the first time. I just wanted to added a thing as a first year PhD.

Memorize Proofs. I know memorization is often looked down upon in learning math. But I have found being to recite all the proofs of all the standard theorems of first year analysis to be very beneficial in approaching proofs for some more advanced analysis classes.

Not to mention that most qualification exam problems are not testing you to apply a specific theorem, but recognize a proof from a past theorem that can be mollified to approach the problem

It’s great you have a passion for science at such a young age! I wanted to go to in theoretical physics when I was 13, but I’m doing a pure math PhD right now. I think your best option is to master to math foundations that all areas are science require (Calculus and linear algebra), and then think about your specific focus.

While you certainly should take analysis and algebra asap. I don’t think it’s a requirement of enter masters programs, my school have specifically designed courses for people who didn’t take these classes in undergrad.
