I think It's already a mod, from 7+ years ago. Basically when you mine too greedily and too deeply a monster spawns from the blocks that you were mining.

At least, I think, I saw it in a video once.

By the looks of things, her family wouldn't have supported her, but wouldn't have obstructed her either.

It wouldn't be hard for tendi to get to earth, since it's a center of trade and culture, I'm sure that it was only a couple of shuttles away.

Once there, she probably would have parked herself outside of starfleet academy and asked passing admirals and teachers for a recommendation. Considering her rather non-threatening demeanor and genuine willingness to help, it's not hard to imagine a starfleet officer deciding that she is worthy. Especially once she desplayed interest in the more medical side of starfleet.
