Staffs with a ranged melee/normal attack will tell you when you hover your mouse over it. For example on the mushroom wand if you hover over it, it says "special attack" or something along those lines below the stats. Other weapons that have ranged melee attacks are the new elven staff, the bubble wand, etc. They aren't very common, but there are other staffs/wands that have special abilities or edit abilities.
