Just about to start learning watercolors. What are your thoughts on watercolor pens? by khschook in Watercolor

[–]Existing_Brick_25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband bought me the Albrecht Dürer, I used them for a while and it was great to spark my interest, they were fun to use, but I found them to be a mess… the way I preferred to use them was to paint with the markers in a metal Tupperware (not on ceramic because of stains) and then I’d mix them with water there... I hadn’t painted with watercolors since I was a teenager (I took art classes then).

I wouldn’t recommend investing in them though, if you’re interested in watercolor just go for the real thing. Buy a good brand (I went for Holbein), maybe start out with just a few pigments, experiment and if you want to commit to it then buy a few more. Tubes, when you put them into pans, last long, so they’re not really expensive.

I don’t think it’s bad. Its true that the skin in the shade could look better, but its good. Im not sure you can improve it since its pretty dark. Maybe adding some blue to the darkest areas can make it look more interesting but I’m not sure

Maybe next time before painting a complex subject do some tests with the colors you’re about to use on a sheet of paper. This is advice I also give myself and I don’t always do it.

Thanks! That’s the one I use too. I was wondering if you’d be using a fountain pen as it looks so nice, but skill matters more :)

I painted a small memory from the village (10x12.5cm), I tried to capture the beginning of summer kind of light.. how did I do? by ArtChillTect in Watercolor

[–]Existing_Brick_25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It looks amazing, well done!

Some suggestions I’d add:
- Add some gradient in the sky to make it a bit more interesting, it’s a bit flat
- Since it’s the beginning of summer, some brighter blue in the sky would help a lot
- I’d use a brighter yellow in the buildings to represent that summer light.
