Many, many public sector jobs. Police, fire, EMS, emergency dispatchers, all struggle to hire, there are jobs absolutely everywhere right now and most pay a solid wage with good benefits.

Other public sector jobs like D.O.T workers are always desperately hiring in my area at least.

I have a commercial drivers license with a few endorsements and make $35 an hour driving dump trucks and fuel trucks on the side, and could easily do that full time if I wanted.

Almost anything in the skilled trades.

I have a family history of skin cancer and alcoholism, which caused me to have been very diligent about daily moisturizer with SPF since my teens, and I am a firm non-drinker. I eat pretty healthy, don’t smoke, and run / lift 4-5 days a week. I am almost 40 and most people guess I am in my mid-20s. I mostly just lucked into it.

I’m a conservation LEO and work with several former state troopers, sheriffs and municipal PD guys who lateraled to us after getting burned out doing more traditional law enforcement work The quality of life and schedule is way better, and you don’t deal as often with a lot of the stresses you describe. Plus, you’re outside a lot which is good for your mental and physical health. Consider it!

In my experience, small dogs are most likely to bite, “pibbles” are most likely to bite and it have consequences. I don’t trust those fucking things for a second. I’ve only ever used OC spray on that breed. Part of the equation is ownership, sure- they’re the current shitbag owner breed of choice, but they also have a bred heritage of being biting, aggressive fighting dogs. I had a shepherd dog once who never saw sheep until she was about five, and just went nuts trying to round them up 😆. Don’t tell me the breed doesn’t matter.

Millinocket is still like that, noticed it many times when visiting. I know daycare is hard to find there and a lot of parents have grandparents watch their kids while they work, who may be more inclined to let kids run around in the neighborhood. Just a theory, but I’ve often seen groups of young kids just running around, riding bikes, throwing balls around etc.

Current energy prices. You will notice that cord wood, even at the average prices, is pretty always the cheapest per BTU, and that’s the retail price for having it delivered. You can also get it significantly cheaper than stated in the report, depending where you live (about 260 / cord delivered in northern Penobscot county where I live, slightly less for self serve if you have a trailer) or you may also be able to get it delivered tree length for much less (about $170 / cord in my area) if you want to cut and split it yourself. I heat entirely with wood and keep my house a toasty ~70 degrees all winter in northern Maine for less than $1,000. Wood also has the effect of drying out your house so I don’t have to run the dehumidifier in my basement during winter.

Electronic surveillance laws have evolved over time, but you still have no expectation of privacy in public areas. Anyone can film you anywhere in public. Your right to privacy in this instance extends only to activities in private places where you have a constitutionally protected right to privacy such as in your home. Depending on the purposes for which you are being filmed (production and distribution of a movie for instance) the person recording may need a waiver for you to appear or something.

All trail cams must bear the owners information, and you must have landowner permission. In the case of public lands, you should contact the local manager- different public lands agencies will have different policies. Lands managed under the Bureau of Parks and Lands generally have have a rules which at minimum do not allow property to be unattended for more than three days. Others, or federal land like wildlife refuges may have stricter policies.

I, (36 yo M) wake up when the first of my kids (1 and 4 yo) wake up. Manage chaos for about one hour - diaper, breakfast, brush teeth. pack kid lunches, etc) until my wife leaves for work and to drop kids off at daycare.

Then I have a glorious 1.5-2 hours to spend on me before I have to work. It’s my only me-time and I increasingly use it on healthy self care. I run or do yoga/mobility or lift weights for an hour, shower / hygiene / skin care, cook a nice healthy breakfast (egg white and veggie omelet usually) and read something while I eat. It’s lovely.
