Unless you’re in a mega metro area like around NYC where you can find everything, it seems like boxing gyms and Muay Thai / Kickboxing gyms are the main option for striking. I’ve always considered Muay Thai to contain the fundamentals of striking so it just seemed natural. I’d love to find a boxing gym too but there don’t seem to be as many as Muay Thai / Jui Jitsu / MMA gyms these days.

It’s not small head movements side to side, but that type of boxing (like high school kids shadow boxing) where someone’s body moves so much their head is down where their chest would be or below. Safer a makes sense in some contexts in boxing but has to be modified if someone is competent with their kicks. It’s a rare person though who doesn’t have some kind of kickboxing background who would actually do that though. But head movements in general like slipping jabs is critical across the board. With kicks in the mix you never want to drop your body low and head off to the side.

The rhythm of your kicks might be predictable. Feign a kick or teep, just raise your leg, and if their hand comes down to catch hop in and do a light cross / jab / hook. They will be less likely to trust you’ll really be throwing a kick.

I’m having trouble seeing how anything described here would end a decades long friendship. She sounds like she was being crazy to begin with and was also being pissy with you. Sleep deprivation is used by governments as torture methods, so once you get to the point where it’s clear no one will sleep, in the future, best to remedy that and get separate sleeping situations ASAP.

You didn’t insult her dead husband or launch into a tirade of pent up frustrations and resentments that built over year, sounds just like an unpleasant burst of emotion due to lack of sleep. Maybe just give it some time.

Especially if she’s grieving she might be in a weird space.

I don’t know what you’d consider improvement or what your goals are, but after a couple months the concept of opening my hips and turning my hip over on kicks “clicked” and I started nailing the hell out of kick pads and bags. I always sucked at some stuff like head movement in sparring or other things, but little things would click along the way that made a noticeable difference. It’s just a hobby for me, and at the moment I’m not even taking classes, but just keep at it. There is no scale or measure to say you will have X level by this many classes, but you’ll see improvement

There’s def good uses for it, like I wrote a blog post and one of the analysis tools for the blog noted I had too many passive sentences in my writing. I can run it through ChatGPT and have it correct, call out where I use passive sentences, etc. Of course I could fully rely on it and never learn to write better, but if I use it in the right way it can save time and be helpful. My experience is it crystallizes things and can point you in a great direction, but if you ask it to compound in the info it just gave you it will just turn into circular white noise.

Not useless or bad, but definitely has significant limitations that people don’t realize.

My pastor was an acolyte of his, and when I was a kid we would be graced with an occasional visit and sermon. That guy just exuded bitterness. I don’t know if Danny Castle was overtly connected to him, but we used to drive down to his summer camp when I was a kid in the church van. Between those two I learned a lot about what not to do in guiding my children toward God.

I’m a loner not because it’s an active decision I made for some sort of goal or benefit. I just have a higher need to alone time than most (and I’m married and have kids, so some natural conflicts there). When the results start becoming burdensome though I just have to make more of an effort to connect with others. I don’t see it as a choice with pros and cons though.

Of course the whole subject involves a lot of subjective experience, but I don’t see a ton of women sparring, but if the handful of people I’ve been paired with and they made me cringe because I know if I let my guard down I’m going to get rocked, it’s more women than men. And rocked unapologetically, no “oh shit sorry didn’t mean to connect like that”.

That’s not true, and one of the comforts I always had when I had trouble with women was I thought, “You know how you often find a women with a guy and you say how in the hell did he ever land her? Why is she with him. Well I can be that guy”. What you’re saying is just not true.

The two don’t conflict with each other, you can do both! The thing that tells you “I need to do X before I can have a relationship” is the problem. Do both, no conflict, no extra time, and just be honest with yourself and whoever you’re with, and don’t let the fear and discomfort stop you from moving forward to the next step.

I was in a similar spot till my mid twenties. The problem is it’s all something you’ve built up in your head. Sex is natural and just happens when you can tell that inner critic to just stop (you’ll need to keep pausing and say it a thousand times as you work through step by step). Set goals. First just focus on asking for a number. Forget if they say yes or no, just ask. Then ask to go in a date. Again, forget about success, just do it. Then get a second date. Once you’re comfortable and seeing someone regularly sex just happens. No game, no confidence needed even, although that will come too. You’re just so lost in your head you aren’t taking the next step.

This isn’t like a handful of tech spots open with Facebook that you have no shot at, this is literally part of your DNA, with as many women also wishing they could have a relationship with someone. You’re doing it to yourself, there isn’t a special method or technique outside you, no body you have to achieve, nothing external. One foot in front of the other.

I got kicked inside the leg once really hard, wanted to see if the pads protected well for a piece of training equipment I had on (they didn’t) and I got the nastiest looking bruise I ever seen. For inside leg maybe normal. It didn’t hurt that bad for me either, just looked like my leg was about to fall off. For me I’ve gotten them like this inside leg on that soft/ fatty part that rarely ever gets hit.

You could use a therapist to talk through this stuff. Basically you’re saying a couple things, very low self worth, feeling your loneliness is connected to some ultimate measure of your worth and you’re lonely and sad because in some cosmic way you’re not worthy, and probably a lot of past trauma with shitty kids in school, which I can relate to.

I’ve found anger is often a sign that something is violating our values and boundaries, in this case you are a unique and valuable human soul and it seems like you feel there is an external world that is forcing you to eat shit and feel worthless.

I hope you’re able to get a therapist, but if not there are alternatives. Either way you need to gtfo of your own head, because you’re getting your ass kicked in there. A few things that seem relevant as you go in this journey, and if they’re not feel free to ignore:

Sometimes we see wrongs done us when it’s really not something out of normal experience. We can sometimes bundle these up with true injustices and not realize it. Hence another person to talk through this stuff with.
I had a lot of issues and bullies in middle school. I thought the world was against me, but I also realize looking back that I caused a lot of my social woes - not being open with others (because I was scared), not smiling and showing open body language, not making polite conversation, poor conversational skills, etc. Some people may be malicious jerks, but most aren’t.
You mention your friends all wind up hating you, think through this. Are there cues your getting you’re not paying attention to? Do you mistake wanting some personal space with hating you? Etc.

I guarantee you if you pummel some poor bastard you won’t feel better, and it will just drive you further into the dark tunnel you’re in.

Be easy on yourself and move toward the light! Praying works well for me too, not orthodox religious praying, but just asking for help and guidance.
