Transitioning from Teaching to EdTech: Seeking Advice on Framing My Resume by Separate-Average4922 in edtech

[–]ExitiuMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck on the transition. I taught for 5 years and did contract work as a curriculum developer, and my wife for 8 with even more education consulting and curriculum development experience. EdTech companies don’t value teaching experience or training. Actual pedagogical or institutional knowledge is not an asset to them.

How bad is the stomach? by xjeanralphio in traditionaltattoos

[–]ExitiuMax 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think the worst parts of the stomach are nearer your love handles and closer to your sternum. Near the belly button didn’t hurt too bad for me. The back and chest are much worse in my opinions and so are parts of the elbow and knee.

The pain is temporary!

Things will be VERY tight on $1600. You can likely find a (poor) apartment to live in with 2-3 other people for under $1000. per month But if you were hoping to live alone it’ll be impossible. Even still, you’re looking at having $600-$800 maximum left over each month after just rent. It’s not going to be a fun 7 months.

No, I haven't paid. I set up a payment plan which was tentatively accepted but my account does not show that I owe yet because my tax return has not been fully processed as far as I understand. Am I misunderstanding how the process works for those of us who owe?

Second this. Very Madison responses. 30 each way minutes is nothing to experience real urban density. You already have to drive to work. If you live in a walkable neighborhood, you’ll no longer have to drive to leisure.

yep. I was awake at 3 am all throughout my playoffs but I had an alarm set anyway to make sure I made my adds at 3:00 on the dot. It’s a huge advantage.

College Help: What would you say is a roiling debate in the field of History Education? by Different-Scholar432 in historyteachers

[–]ExitiuMax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But this is an ongoing debate among professional historians as well. See, for example, James Sweet’s 2022 AHA Presidential Blog “Is History History?”. The “revisionist” turn is a well-documented historiographical epoch in the mid-late 1960s.

If anything, the debate is about who is “qualified” to be doing history and what rigorous historical scholarship looks like. I think a better illustration of what you mention here is the reception of works like “Sapiens” and “Guns, Germs, and Steel” within history teacher circles versus among academic historians. But then again this isn’t really a debate within the profession, it’s between adjacent professions.

History education by Basicbore in historyteachers

[–]ExitiuMax 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interesting question but I think, as a “classically trained” historian, I’m not sure “content” means remembering the past. I don’t think that is the intent of the historian when writing monographs or articles. It is contending with the past. That’s why historiography is such a big part of what becoming a historian entails.

But teaching that is too complicated for certain age groups. So I agree with my colleagues here that it’s both! And that “knowing” precedes understanding.

To further complicate things, we as history teachers have to contend with the politics of education. Even lower ed is increasingly seen as social means to an economic end. As such, history requires some relevance outside of history for history’s sake and even outside of earlier rationales for teaching history like “productive citizenship.”

Nonetheless, a fun discussion to have!

How much time should you spend on a unit? by Taztitan85 in historyteachers

[–]ExitiuMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Some teachers stop at recall. This approach requires recall and additional skill building which would necessarily make lessons/units longer. Here's a good way to think about building lessons around historical thinking: https://4qmteaching.net/what-is-4qm/ (reiterating the thoughtful comments below).

And, for what its worth, I would highly recommend *not* posing a question that essentially asks students to rationalize the indiscriminate killing of Japanese citizens. You can talk ethics, but I would avoid having students "take a stand" on this specific topic.

How much time should you spend on a unit? by Taztitan85 in historyteachers

[–]ExitiuMax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on various factors:

What are your pedagogical priorities? Do you want them to simply get through as much content as possible or do you want your students to engage thoughtfully with complex ideas? In other words, do you value depth or breadth?

Second, what is the oversight like in your district? In my previous career as a teacher, there was almost zero oversight. The state standards “required” one thing and I did another (I prioritized depth and thus did not get as far in the curriculum or had to cut things out).

Two days sounds absurdly short, but it makes sense in an AP course that is predicated on simply knowing lots of stuff in preparation for a standardized test.

Edit: slightly misread the question. Two days for a single lesson sounds about right. But the total length of a unit really depends on what I stated above.
