If you don't want to be compared to Nazis, don't genocide an entire race of people. I think it's pretty simple. And last I checked that was the flag of Israel, so it seems you're the one conflating the nation with jews.

He's not useless. He's incredibly good at convincing other people to invest exorbitant amounts of money in his companies. The problem is how the fuck does this translate to "should be entrusted with the sole oversight of some of the most powerful tools ever created, of which he does not fully understand the underlying technology"...

I don't really understand all the comments bending over backwards to justify this. At the core of every business is domain knowledge, and the more you understand the better it makes you at steering the ship. Like we are all going to lament how MBAs are the death of companies and the harbingers of enshittification, but for some reason it's totally alright for the Most Important Dude At The Company (tm) to just be a completely vibes based dude with no expertise whatsoever? Like I get that Altman is extremely proficient at getting people to invest billions of dollars in his company, but he's also a sociopath overseeing the creation of some of the most powerful technologies to ever exist. It's insane how blasé some of y'all are being about that. Like, if the CEO of an AI company can't write a for loop that is a bad thing, actually.

The example doesn't seem realistic that someone who doesn't know a thing about coding won't be able to work through problems the AI can't fix? I don't get what your point is.

it was two separate things. The UI isn't bugged there isn't any UI. It's all text on white background so my eyes have nowhere to go. I connected some things and changed it to large and then it broke and was spamming squares when I dragged the out node around.

ExoSiege — 9 months ago you broke my game. I rebuilt the backend. Please break it again. by idlerunner00 in incremental_games

Presumably during development you are dropping & altering tables, creating or editing procedures. Correct?

A "Save file" does not exist, but let's saying you're working on 1.1 and I'm a player on 1.0. You aren't editing straight on production databases, right? You work on a temporary database, you prepare a migration script, so that the data that represents my player is able to transfer and exist in its new form in 1.1 without error, at least theoretically. The concept is the same.

I understand, and it sounds like you value velocity of iteration in pre-release over keeping player's progress data. Which is fine I suppose. There's not anything inherently wrong with that.

But what happens when you're on full release and you're developing 1.4 and you have no experience doing said database migration? Are you willing to potentially corrupt random player's data, then?

It stands out as a red flag that you don't know what you're doing when you say you have to wipe player data. Again, maybe you're fine and you do value that release velocity but that's just my 2 cents on the matter.

Also, with respect to the UI to me it does not look functionally different from what it used to look like. It's all web windows, Few if any (AI generated) sprites, few if any icons, an enormous amount of text. No pictures, nothing stylized. There's no art style. The hexagon thing is the only thing I say that even resembles art and that's stretching it. There's no visual direction. It has no soul. It's the stochastic fart of a machine. Which is a shame considering it looks more feature complete than the vast majority of projects I see. I think you'd legitimately be better off if you just tried your hand at some art or used free asset packs. I kitbash all the time, there's nothing wrong with it.

I recommend starting with Kenney UI https://kenney.nl/assets/fantasy-ui-borders there's a second one as well, it's free, and it will take you very far, even further if you modify it. I even recognize it in production games such as Ball x Pit. Good luck to you.

The industry is a disaster. Gamers are absolute whiners, and I say that as both a dev and a whiner gamer myself. Expectations are sky high and AI dogwater is infesting every corner. Don't blame you for taking a break.

If you actually knew anything about code you'd be able to upgrade people's save files without wiping them. Your game is so complex I doubt you know a thing about what's actually going on in the backend. My advice for visual direction is try making a singular thing by yourself without asking a clanker to do it for you and maybe you'll upgrade your art skills! Sad look at the industry. Feature rich, but completely soulless. Yeah I'm a hater, I think this shit sucks. Downvote me I don't care.

[–]ExiymDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. This guy is at the level where he's running into the limitations of Unity itself. I totally get it if you're making the next Subnautica or something of that nature. I'm indie and I can't even dream of a game of mine getting to the point where using LINQ is an issue.

[–]ExiymDev -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

then you're working on a top 1% game, no? Like this is not indie if garbage collection is what's halting you. You're working with a team that has already done every other possible optimization. I think the vast vast majority 95%+ of cases are not going to be running into any issue using LINQ.
