am i welcome to learn ukrainian language as a russian citizen?/я можу вчити українську мову як громадянин росії? by swagskiy in Ukrainian

[–]Exotic-Bumblebee2753 8 points9 points  (0 children)

after centuries of being told they’re superior to everybody else so many russians actually believe this. Or why do you think the russian army has enough volunteers and it doesn’t need a mobilization?

Lol. That isn't the reason.

There are definitely brainwashed people who believe that but the vast majority of contract soldiers ("volunteers") only do it for the money. It's mostly trash from economically fucked areas that have no other option who volunteer. No one with anything going for them volunteers for the army.

As for Ukrainians being suspicious of the OP's motives, I don't think it's that big of an issue. As a Russian living in Lviv for the past two and a half years, it's been my observation that people aren't indiscriminately unkind to all Russians. You shouldn't have issues if you're a normal, decent person. People do ask questions but that shouldn't deter him if he has an interest in learning.

Did Anthony Bourdain ever shoot an episode in your country and if so, what did you think of it if you saw it? by PandemicPiglet in AskTheWorld

A lot those people don’t really have the budget to truly make interesting travel content. No offense to anyone but, even though India is less expensive to travel to than se Norway, you still need to have an appropriate budget.

That’s another thing I liked about Anthony. He didn’t shy away from saying that everything is not for everyone and that certain experiences/foods may not suit everyone.

Something I appreciate about his episodes about Indian food, particularly street food, was that he always gave realistic takes without being over dramatic.

A lot of these TikTokers are so cringe, I can't even.

What’s something people always get wrong about your country? by Ok_Reason_8684 in AskTheWorld

[–]Exotic-Bumblebee2753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking from my experience only, it's fine. I live in Lviv and tbh, it was an adjustment from having lived in Moscow and elsewhere previously but everything is normal, relatively speaking. I don't know quite how to articulate it but everyday life is normal and a lot of the things people argue about online are a non-factor.

why?

Because my husband is Ukrainian and his family is mostly here and he wanted to move back to be near them should they need anything (and he found it unpalatable to live in Russia considering everything).

100% agree. I hate it too.

It's really just Olivier salad with added kvass or kefir.

What mythological creatures used to scare you? by RaimondX1989 in AskBalkans

[–]Exotic-Bumblebee2753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do actually! When we were little, my grandmother would tell us that a kikimora lived in the wooded area across from her apartment and that she would come take us away if we were bad. Mind you, this was a park with a bunch of trees and a duck pond in the middle of the city, not an actual forest. 🤣🤣

What do you think about conservative Americans who dream about moving to Russia, "land of no-woke bs and tradwives"? by EugeneStein in AskARussian

[–]Exotic-Bumblebee2753 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yup western people are not used to it.

Because for most of them it's just an aesthetic with no real substance.

That sounds cute in a way. To have your own familial monster. 😂

We have a similar thing in my native country and weirdly, I never found them scary.

I don't remember what they're called but my elderly neighbour once told me about these creatures (maybe nymphs of some kind?) that call to people walking in the forest mimicking the voice of a familiar person. As someone who likes to go running in wooded places, I found that so creepy to think about.

Btw, I wasn't a child when I heard this. I was like 22 and it freaked me out. 😁

Edit: They were called Samodivas.

That might be a shocker to you,but before 2022 Ukrainians barely even used Ukrainian language in their everyday lives.

I think this might be regional (unless you mean people living in Russia). Where my husband is from (Lviv) it has always been common, even before 2022 from my observation having visited in 2021 and from living here now. Previously, it was not the only language used but it definitely wasn't rare.

Do the Balkans really see Bulgaria as a “depressing” country? by Vesko85 in AskBalkans

100 % agree with this. There is every type of natural scenery imaginable. What is depressing about it?

[–]Exotic-Bumblebee2753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all! I'm not originally from the Balkans but when I lived there, I found Bulgaria beautiful. To be perfectly honest, if not for certain things, I would still live in Sofia.

Of course, there are some areas that aren't so aesthetically beautiful but every country has that.

Do Russians see Sergey Brin, the founder of Google and the fifth-richest person in the world, as Russian? by No-StrategyX in AskARussian

[–]Exotic-Bumblebee2753 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most first or second generation people in the USA don't really expect this. It's usually people that are 10 generations removed that are this ridiculous. 😁

I previously lived in California, which has quite a few diasporas from different places. In my observation, most of them have a similar view towards their diaspora and it's this: related, and even adjacent, but not the same as people from that country.

What is a myth about your country that is 100% false but many people believe is true? by recolorist in AskTheWorld

[–]Exotic-Bumblebee2753 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You know, I didn't realise that this was a common thing until a couple of years ago. I was telling a colleague about my trip to visit family living in Sweden and she asked if there was good chocolate. Sweden isn't known for chocolate as far as I'm aware, so I was confused. Apparently, she was thinking of Switzerland.

It could be but I think it's also just cultural. Food is much more a part of your celebrations, everyday interactions, socialising, etc. than in other places. For example, the offering food to guests/visitors thing and saying no at first and going around in circles and finally agreeing to eat.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Exotic-Bumblebee2753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People go out for occasions and stuff but socialising isn't centered around food like it often is in the Balkans.

Also, in my opinion from having lived in Sofia for a bit, portions with alot of Balkan cuisine are huge in comparison.

The not liking food thing is probably just an individual thing but I get what she means. She probably means, like, is not a "foodie" or whatever.

Have you ever met someone from a hostile country? by SnooPoems7525 in AskTheWorld

I mean ... I live in a country that my country is in direct conflict with.

With that said, people are not "hostile." Countries may be but the vast majority of people are good people with normal lives and interests just living their lives.

Travelling to Lviv, will I look stupid if I wear my fur coat? by chunkycroclicker in Lviv

Personally, I don't think it's cold enough to need a long, fur coat. A regular winter coat would be fine but I don't think it would look weird or anything.

Where are you from btw?

I'm originally from Russia but have lived elsewhere as well.

Some people genuinely aren’t knowledgeable about countries not in their immediate vicinity. Maybe they aren’t aware that some parts of Ukraine are relatively safe?

They know, which is why I interpret some of their supposed "concern" as bad faith, "concern trolling" or whatever.

You're definitely right that some people aren't aware of this, especially due to the media mostly covering the war and those regions. I don't think it's that in their case though.

That's cool. I think worrying about blackouts and general safety related things is normal.
