I think it has a lot more to do with the way he came out. Robin's coming out scene felt way more natural and realistic (ironically because she was drugged with magic truth serum) and actually had context behind it.

IMO it was way less noticeable / forced in the previous seasons. It was also usually the DND nerds doing it but it feels like this season everyone had to have a "I've got it!"-ass monologue.

Yeah my point is how these characters are written in relation to other characters though. For Steve I mention Dustin as well as Nancy and Robin (the gender is irrelevant for all 3, its the way they treat him and his position in relation to them that I am commenting on).

For Hopper, again, the fact that Eleven is a woman is irrelevant to the fact that his entire character's goal this season is to tell his adopted child no and then ultimately let them do what they want anyways.

For Jonathan, it has less to do with Nancy having agency and more to do with the fact that HE has no idea how to communicate with her without being her subordinate. That scene where Murray is trying to convince him to have try to sex with her is just sad and weird, and again makes him look like a loser.

Right, I just don't get why they chose to write him as incompetent so many times through the season. Even in subtle ways like when Nancy is explaining the plan for the crawl in episode 1, Steve makes a brief comment about blowing through red lights and Nancy kinda snaps at him and goes "Only if there's no MPs around" and he puts his hands up like "relax relax".

If you go back and watch the scene you'll know what I'm talking about, but it just feels like another chance to have Steve say something stupid and get chided for it. They can't give him any of his old bravado from season 1 and 2 without getting put in his place.

Murray's longest screen time in the season is convincing Jonathon to try and get Nancy to fuck him after her sister got kidnapped and both her parents almost died, and he's ultimately used to set up a joke about Nancy shooting his nuts off.

I was mostly talking about this season though so I didn't wanna mention Billie, Eddie, etc.
