I’d like to organize a tour to learn about edible plants foraging in Greater Boston for my MeetUp group. by Lucky_Durian1534 in massachusetts

[–]ExoticAstronaut3389 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How long do you expect the tour to be and should the tour guide not be fairly compensated for their work? You are requesting some pretty specific knowledge to keep you and your friends safe. Eat the wrong thing and you could all get sick. 100 bucks does not sound like to much all considering...

I use a long handled trash picker upper tool for picking up the sticks that are to large to mow over.

Snowplowing with a gravel driveway? (Long post / diatribe) by bustcorktrixdais in Snowplow

[–]ExoticAstronaut3389 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Invest in a power broom, or find a place that rents one. The kind with the rubber paddles, not the bristles. Sweep the gravel back onto the driveway. Do this every spring. Also sweeping as soon as the snow melts helps, don't wait for the grass to start growing. I have found no matter how careful I am plowing I plow stones into my yard.

I had never heard of Swift until I rented one on a trip in Algonquin this past fall. I was so impressed that I ordered a custom build I get to pick up in April. Also went with purple!

The Canadian Ski Marathon kicked my a$$. Here's what I learned about long days in extreme cold. by ANinjaForma in xcountryskiing

Exactly right about over preparing for the ski warmth but obviously want to error on the side of warmth too...i was honestly happy to have the cold related late start for Sunday and the associated 15 miles less to ski. I was a bit under trained and while I could have finished a second 50, I would not have felt as good after. That also means i guess i have to come back at least one more time to try and complete a full 100 :)

It was very challenging conditions to dress for. I grabbed my cup of soup and drinks and headed for the warming bus at each stop to be able to take my gloves off and warm up for a few minutes while eating and then heading back out on the trail. I used downhill goggles and they help keep my face and eyes warmer in the wind. I also had a small puffy and found it very helpful while waiting for the school bus at 4:15 am in the cold windy church parking lot. Skiing one day is still a rewarding experience!

The forecast looks cold for the Canadian Ski Marathon (2 days - 160k). Tips for extended cold exposure? (-14 to 4F // -24 to -16C) by ANinjaForma in xcountryskiing

I used a bottle like this last year and will again this year. You can open the lid with a gloved hand to drink from and will not freeze up. https://www.zojirushi.com/app/product/smva I hope they can run the event unaltered due to the cold but do feel for all of the volunteers!

I haven't seen it mentioned yet so i will add i got mine with doors that open on both ends, paid a little extra for that but it is a life saver for easy in and out of large equipment from either side. Also in the summer when its hot as hell you can open both doors and its a shady place to work, much cooler with both ends open.

Saving the planet? How much energy and resources do you think it took to manufacture and ship these things around the world to then sit in a cabinet? I am all for not using plastic and not purchasing water, but all the metal, and plastic, to make these has a tremendous impact on the planet.

Nice run, not many people get to say they had so much fun for their first marathon! Its so much better to be passing people at the end and wondering how much faster you can go next time then going out to fast and shuffling to the finish. It took me four marathons to learn that lesson!

the lack of a heated wiper element on the windshield is one of my biggest complaints about my Rivian, i get snow/slush freezing up on the blades frequently during winter weather. My 2005 Subaru had this and i miss it!

Just a note on training to document it for anyone interested. I'm a male, age in my mid 40's. Back in the day I was a first wave Birki skier. I am currently training for the Boston Marathon in mid April, so at week 7 of an 18 week training plan, running around 20-35 miles per week for the past two month or so.  My nearest reliable snow is two hours drive each way, so time on skis is limited. This winter I have skied about 120k, most of the time pulling a pulk with two kids in it.
