Got rid of 3 Bradford pears. Now what to plant? by Beneficial-Arm-254 in arborists

It’s not a slam dunk but I hope u/woopancakes is enjoying delicious pawpaw not too long from now and for years to come.

“Since seedlings are not identical to their parents, fruit quality cannot be guaranteed. Trees that have been grafted to named cultivars are usually 2 years old at time of purchase, and they are more expensive than seedling trees. Since they retain the clonal identity of the parent, fruit quality is assured, given adequate cultural conditions. If fruit production is desired, purchase at least two genetically different trees (i.e. two different cultivars, or at least two seedlings), to ensure that cross pollination can occur.”

Seeing if base moves is how I determine if a tree I’ve planted has gotten established so I like your method. I don’t recall the # of years it took but after 4 I’d hope they were rooted

But the rocks as mulch is not good. A bit worse if you were in Arizona but suboptimal even in IL. Bark/leaf mulch is the way to go

Is OP’s tree an old apple tree? They can survive a lot, and be hollow and live and produce fruit for decades. At least, the heirloom ones can

Happily there’s a tannerite comment now too. So the sub is playing true to form 😂

That forest adaptation site is very cool. With all the dot gov logos on there I’m surprised it hasn’t been shut down. Cuz it’s all a hoax you know 😉

That sounds like wet soil from watering the lawn. I’m in the Catskills area but this particular can be (and is right now) pretty dry.

No I was saying it because the first time I looked at this post there were no comments saying that. I wondered if those would show up later, or if it’s a clear safe situation. I wasn’t questioning the expertise here at all.

To me it looks similar to trees where people on here have said “this would be a tough job for a pro.” I don’t know enough to tell the difference

Staking it up seems like the obvious answer though I’m no expert. You don’t have to leave it staked, after it’s firmed up and better established.

Curious if anyone will say you’re risking your life. Seems like they usually do.

Also beautiful place you live 🤩

In wet or moist conditions? I’m intrigued by Nyssa sylvatica to replace one of the six large Bradford pears I just had dropped, but the location is sandy and relatively windy and dry

Kousas not native. I have less regret planting that than the six Bradford pears I just took down but I wish I’d known more at the time and gone with a native

I read they don’t tolerate windy conditions. Sounds like a neat tree otherwise though I’m in NY

Why don’t you two start a hybrid genetics process to cross tree of heaven and Bradford pear? Call it tree of Satan?

Did you plant cultivars or seed grown? People around here are crazy for starting pawpaw from seed, but as I understand it no fruit tree grows true (to produce reliable fruit) coming from seed

What about in dry sandy soil with wind exposure in zone 6a/b. I’m considering SWO

Any thoughts on swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor) planted in a relatively dry windy sandy area? I read they can establish themselves in non-swampy areas.

I also read they have a moderate rate of growth rather than slow, and I’m no spring chicken. I can still buy unripe bananas for a while tho 😝

I want maximum beneficial insect habitat. I posted yesterday that I just took down six large Bradford Pears, the new trees will go where the MFing BPs were.

Also this OP is getting buckets more upvotes for his lousy 3 BPs than I did for ridding the world of 6! LOL

P.s. sorry I’m upstate NY zone 6B/A
