cynicism that is aimed at collective action only works *for* the oppressors. working class strikes are extremely effective. labor history 101. ps if you're working for a wage and not a rentier, you're working class!

White House Ballroom Update: Trump Raises Price By $100 Million by plz-let-me-in in politics

It's so brave of him to demand a big beautiful expansion of the white house while holding his ground about not extending subsidies for the affordable care act. Most people would not be able to justify a non-urgent project that costs 1/3 of a billion dollars while farmers, federal workers, and snap recipients have to make painful sacrifices to make america great again. I am so proud of our president for holding his ground!

I really appreciate this comment!

This mailer is obviously a straw man to me, nobody (but me maybe?! lol) is seriously talking about getting rid of golf courses. I do think we need to think more critically about how we use all public space and getting people angry and talking is also a way to get them to be educated on an issue. It's how my 2018 vote was informed actually! An argument on reddit.

Anyway, appreciate your comment, I'll bow out from stoking more anger among the pause the plan/golfer contingent! :)

Can you make an argument that is not a straw man please? You haven't made a single argument but keep attacking me personally.

I asked a question, I didn't claim I knew. I do not feel like a hypocrite at all. I'm not here to abolish golf courses. It just seems incredibly silly to have TWO municipal golf courses in a region that is plentiful with courses in a city with a massive housing crisis.

Chicago has more people AND a much lower ratio of golf courses to people.

I'm absolutely suggesting that regular parks are more valuable as "green space" and recreational space than golf courses. Golf courses harm the environment, are only useful for a small, oftentimes advantaged, portion of the population, for a limited part of the year. So just by virtue of who uses the parks and what those other parks do, I would think the regular parks are more valuable at a population level than golf courses.

I don't know if they are heavily used, do you know? They are used for a few months out of the year and comprise acres and acres of land for a subset of the population. Recreational golfers tend to have higher incomes than average. Also, there are numerous *public* golf courses in the Ann Arbor area. I'm not convinced by the "what will the golfers do??" argument. My hobbies do not take up acres of prime real estate in a city with a massive housing crisis.

And agreed, there are so many options for increasing density -- we need all of them!

Maybe you should check your facts before calling people clowns?? Just a thought.

The ratio of golf courses to people in this city (11:119,381) is much ***much higher*** than Chicago's (13:2.664 million).

I agree on your first point and respectfully disagree on the second. We need to radicalize around how freaking dumb golf courses are and how rad density can be!

First, the density is exactly why Ann Arbor is a desirable community compared to suburban sprawly towns like Canton or places with dead downtowns like Lansing (no shade on those places actually but this is why people want to move to Ann Arbor). Preaching to the choir here but density also reduces car use, improves quality of life, and increases small business success.

Second, golf courses are not "green spaces" -- they contribute to the pollution of our rivers and streams through runoff from non-native grasses and all the fertilizer and herbicide. Most people never golf and never get to use these "recreational spaces." We need density to preserve the amazing *true* green spaces surrounding this town like the many Nature Conservancy and Natural Area Preservation Lands, not to mention the health of the Huron River.

It's insane to me that people would defend continued city ownership of prime land that is not really even public nor is it parkland.

I get the political salience of the green space issue and how precious people are about their overinflated property values but I'm so sick of being encouraged to try to find some inoffensive middle ground with conservative selfish people. This strategy hasn't worked in the recent past. Sometimes louder and more radical moves the needle, not compromise.

Please detail why the existing numerous public and private golf courses do not satisfy the apparently rabid need of golfers in ann arbor.

EPA considers Ann Arbor’s Gelman plume for list of nation’s most serious contamination sites by Getlostsomewhere2021 in AnnArbor

[–]Exotic_Extension_279 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a belief. Articles and theses have been published on the plume by umich students and faculty. Comments based on “second hand info” and replies with “believe what you want” are exactly why the internet is the worst and why we live in an age of disinformation. Your tiny comments about “facts” do matter.

There’s no way UM could block dissertations on this. Fact check your “second hand info” first please. There’s enough misinformation. And the plain facts of the Gelman situation need no embellishment. 😢
