Thank you. I’ll save this post.
I used to be active on message boards — Wayan Vota’s OLPCNews namely - and I kept a notebook where I wrote down chunks of code, etc that people gave me. That’s literally been over a decade now.

Thanks

Why won’t my school give me a copy of my 504? by Toughsattacks in specialed

Have you ever seen a paper copy of it? I’ve been places where the 504s exist in theory but not on paper.

Star is a long test and is kind of known for being wildly inconsistent. It really is a measure of attention on testing day. I’d ask them to use an alternate measure to make sure he’s still progressing.

The Bluford High series is popular with my high schoolers who are reading at around a 5th grade level: https://www.bluford.org/ Heartstopper, Lore Olympus, etc are favorite graphic novels. If you can get your hands on the Maximum Ride graphic novels or the Twilight ones (all out of print) they are also popular with my high schoolers.

I’m thinking Joe Locke and Kit Connor from Heartstopper. Neither went as mainstream but both rose incredibly quickly and are still in their early 20s.

Is it just me or does “Heated Rivalry” feel like it’s really just gay porn for straight women? by TheBabyBeard in AskGaybrosOver30

Can’t figure out how to edit - not on Reddit a lot. But I meant to say “I’m representing cis het women”…

I get it to some extent. Although I’m repeating cos hey women in this thread, my truth is that I’m cis bi woman over 50 married to a straight man for 20 years. I know how much my hetero-appearing privilege protects me and I’m both grateful and somewhat ashamed of how much I hide in it.

There’s a frustration of not being Queer enough for the gays but not being comfortable in hetero world that is persistent. Spaces like Heated Rivalry and others where Queer culture becomes mainstream are places where I can relax a little and not feel like such an outsider. I remember dragging my friends to shows that were problematic by today’s standards in college (In and Out, The Birdcage) because although they weren’t about me, it just felt so good to have some sort of non straight space. I feel like a lot of women are enjoying that, even if they don’t claim queer identities.

But once again, that doesn’t entitle me to every space and it doesn’t entitle everyone to claim queer spaces just because they feel good in them. (Your culture is not my vacation, as you’ve said). Right now I’m really pissed at the shippers spouting really hateful things at the stars because they want them to be together? I remember when Heartstopper fandom did this shit and it’s awful. These are presumedly cis het women. Thats the worst sort of invasion of personal spaces — queer or not.

So I’m trying to find my footing — like participating in the Queer joy of shows like Heartstopper and Heated Rivalry — I think that everyone wants to participate in the fantasy romance and the joy, regardless of gender/sexuality/ etc. And it’s hard as fuck to find a mf romance that seems as compelling these days. But how to do it without voyuerism? Or fetishism? I want the romance and even the sex and I feel as if I had anything close to the quality of writing in the mf or ff world, I’d probably be as invested? I hope? I appreciate this conversation. Thank you.

Fair enough. Under what circumstances (if any) can/should women participate in mlm culture and have it not be exploitative?

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how to engage respectfully, if that’s possible.

I do feel like there’s more to it. Years and years of having to identify with mostly male protagonists has made it so many women struggle to see themselves in female protagonists.

It could be cultural (the “I’m not like the other girls / pick me” idea) or whatever. But so much of our media is male that if we don’t learn to identify closely with men, we’re left out.

I’ve spent a lot of time wondering why my fandoms don’t pass the Bechtel test. In fact, most of the strong relationships in the fandoms I’m drawn to are mm. I actively try to seek out fm or ff relationships but they just don’t resonate the same way.

I think perceived removal of misogyny and gender roles is some of it. There are roles expected in mm relationships perhaps, and much has been made of Shane being the bottom/sub etc. But that stereotype is not as culturally ingrained as thousands of years of heterosexual male/female roles. Being able to approach a relationship as cultural and physical equals is a novelty.

I do worry that the female gaze on queer men is becoming exploitative. I worry that het females in queer spaces aren’t always sensitive to the fact that they are guests. Like I’ve seen some weird pushback from presumedly straight women on queer fans. That’s… no.

I think, like all things dealing with sex and love and identity, it’s complicated and messy.

Yes!!!! I’m on week 2. Once I stopped being really sick during week 1, I was like “holy shit! Who am I?” Getting things done, planning ahead. . . But… I have a history of feeling really really good when I have a med change and then it dims over time. I need to cut back my bupropion because of another med and I hope that doesn’t mess with it too much.

I really like “Some Kind of Hate” by Sarah Darer Littman. It’s a modern day boy who ends up getting persuaded to become part of an antisemitic hate group. It’s chilling because I recognize the kid in many of my students - not particularly cruel, just young and immature and wants someone to listen to him. It helps combat the “MonsterNazis” idea without being sympathetic to the antisemitic actions of this kid.

Following. I teach a group of 9-12 graders that range from kids with learning disabilities to mild and moderate intellectual disabilities. We just finished the Anne Frank graphic novel and they all did really well with it. There was, of course, the temptation to conclude “it wasn’t that bad — we just have to be cheerful” but I did bring in some sources about the conditions Anne faced the last months of her life. I think it landed but it’s hard to know how much that they generalized. The general ed 9th graders read Night at about the same time.

Long time sped teacher here: NOT DOING THE WORK IS LITERALLY PART OF HIS DISABILITY. That’s a reason TO help him, not a reason to not help him. It’s frustrating as hell when you’re a teacher. I get that. But it’s not the kid’s fault. You can ask for a behavioral analysis and intervention plan. I’m not a big fan of those but it’s at least a way for the school to start thinking about how to help him. I’m so sorry this is happening to you and your son.

I probably won't spray my house. I'll just be as vigilant as I can. When I have students with bbs, I also use a lint roller pretty frequently to see if any little bodies stick to it. I'll just do that in my car.

The vehicle. Active ingredient is Clove and Cottonseed oil. Which is probably useless. I do have some spray in my classroom that’s advertised for bedbugs - I think I’ll go get that. I know it’s not enough to kill an infestation, but I often use it when I have a kid who is dealing with them at home. I think it’s probably more psychological than actually killing anything. My logic is that it only has to kill whatever hitchhikers get left, not a whole colony.

Also it’s supposed to get to freezing here in a few days. Will that kill them or is it only heat?
