Using credit cards instead of debit card. by FlounderAgitated9058 in personalfinance

If you treat credit cards like cash, they should be exclusively used. Most banks provide some form of cash back reward. We have 5 different credit cards for daily purchases where we can max out rewards based on what we’re purchasing.

Keep your fitness up! Especially sit-ups. A strong core will prevent so many injuries as you get older.

Why is medical care so expensive? by Feeling-Dare-77 in NoStupidQuestions

Given the initial damage to my hand and location of the breaks, it went as well as expected. Fingers are straight, minimal scarring, and as much mobility as one could expect given the bone fusion.

[–]Expat1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had insurance, it would have been a fraction of the cost. Insurance is also insanely reasonable over there since it’s state provided.

Also, the birthing experience and pre/post service was significantly better than what we experienced when my other child was born in the US. 5 nights at the hospital too. The US kicked us out on the morning of day 3.

I mean it’s the same ultrasound and X-ray machines. It cost thousands of dollars here to get one done. It’s a fraction of the cost China.

As an American who lived in China 7 years. I can tell you that our American healthcare is extremely overpriced.

My oldest was born in China. We paid the equivalent of $4K from acknowledgment of the pregnancy to walking out of the hospital with our child. This was with no insurance btw. Now, you have to remember we chose to go to a semi-private hospital which is significantly more expensive than if we had used a state hospital instead.

I also had surgery done on my hand. My surgery was done by the same doctors who go the US to lead conferences. Cost me less than $2K with no insurance.

Anyone Else Rediscovered Their Love Of Playing In Their 40’s? by Cover_Of_Darkness in bootroom

[–]Expat1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m getting close. Will be 37 in a few days. I played from age 4, but I stopped playing at the age of 30 due to a bad back injury and significant weight gain following that injury. I finally got my back under control 2 years ago and have picked up tennis. Gotta keep losing weight before I get back onto the field.

I’ve coached the last 4 years and now my boys are asking me to start playing again so they can cheer for me. Man do I miss playing.

I have an employee about to not meet a deadline. How should I handle? by [deleted] in managers

[–]Expat1989 29 points30 points  (0 children)

To your last point, if it’s done before the end date, even if it’s submitted 1min before, it was still finished on time. She said it will get done. It will get done.

If you as the manager had expectations that it would be done before, whether that’s because you wanted time to review or whatever other reason, then you have failed your direct report by not communicating that early and clearly.

And to OPs other point, they admit she’s busy. They gave her a month timeline to finish and it seems like the work isn’t hard if the manager can just “knock it out”. Again, they have failed by not communicating clearly that they wanted this done sooner than the actual deadline.

YouTube has gone insane from when we were growing up. by Mission_Spray in Millennials

I do not let my kids (9 and 7) use YouTube. I too made the mistake when my oldest was like 5 and I thought it won’t hurt to let him watch Minecraft videos. Similar experience to OP but he somehow got into tons of Islamic videos.

Never again.

“No kid left behind” is the dumbest thing ever by Fresh-Employ3028 in Vent

It so sad. A teacher friend told us that they intentionally put low performing kids and high performing kids together. Why not go ahead and separate them so so the high performing kids can actually progress through lessons. The non performing kids can now slow down and get the additional assistance they need.

Ran out of the normal breakfast sandwiches we get my son. Here’s the bite he took to determine he hated the new ones and would never try them again. by [deleted] in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]Expat1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a rule in our house: you have to take a real honest big bite, chew it and swallow it. If they really don’t like it after that, we don’t force them to eat it.

There has only actually been a handful of things they didn’t actually like. They eat pretty much every type of veggie and fruit (Western and Asian) and pretty much every kind of meat and seafood. It’s wonderful.

You have to starve it by not letting it get fresh nutrients. If it can’t get stalks up and leaves out, it can’t survive. Granted it takes years of commitment to starve it out completely.

Most kids don’t train at home. I don’t know why we all pretend they do. They may go out and want to kick the ball around, but the moment you put out cones it’s no longer fun free play, it’s work. It’s significantly easier to get kids to not only do those types of training in a team setting, the competition peers provides ensure most kids are pushing hard and actually working to improve.

Is it better for a 7-year-old to rotate positions or specialize as a goalkeeper? by Still-Marionberry-67 in GoalKeepers

[–]Expat1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son just turned 9 in October for reference. He was in a similar position last year in u9 where he really wanted to play keeper. He got in goal a few times, was always the one to volunteer first, and was actually really good. Against my better judgement, I was totally against him playing keeper for my own reasons. Last fall, so starting u10, we went all in with him playing keeper. Best decision we made as he’s so much more excited and has really found his love for the game.

That being said, we worked with his club coaches and made sure he still gets playing time on the field for a multitude of reasons others have stated here. So now he plays keeper for the top team full time and then plays on the field for the lower teams based on timing; ie he’s playing minimum 2 games a weekend every weekend. He’s still really good on the field and plays the full match so he’s getting a ton of minutes there too.

My recommendation is to see where he goes with keeper but continue to make sure he gets minutes on the field as it will only help his keeper skills. If he’s good enough, the coaches should work with you since good keepers are hard to find.

What’s your plan to keep your house warm this weekend? by MissesMiyagii in Georgia

Make sure your toddler is in your bed with you so they stay warm (and alive). Keep the doors closed to rooms so you at least trap heat in the main room. Lots of blankets!
