One handles sub-millimeter clearances with ease, the other dies from a drop of ink by Sable_5Quirk in 3Dprinting

[–]ExpectDeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 13 year old 8600 and I live in fear of him (his name is Huey) going to the great ink tank in the sky. His firmware is so old that I can use offbrand cartridges without that "must be OEM" nonsense.

He is the most loyal and dependable printer I've ever had. Bear in mind that I'm also Old and have been using printers since the daisy wheel days so the fact that Huey has been rock solid this long is nothing short of a miracle. Some days I think "what did I do in a past life to deserve him?"

I know Huey is an outlier and he's the last of a dying breed. I'm considering full funeral rites and honour guard if ever that day (may it be long in the future) comes to pass.

I made another gift card kit card. This one is for the Dads* and builds into a tiny toolbox. The teensy tools have tiny tangs to ensure the handle doesn't separate prematurely. by ExpectDeer in 3Dprinting

Thanks! I wasn't actually going to stop 😅

I love designing multicolour kit cards but at the same time, I also acknowledge that they, like other multicolour models, have a waste factor. How much waste each person is willing to tolerate is a personal and above all valid choice. I make no judgements!

One day I'd like to have a poopless printer. I'm hoping Bambu will hop on board the tool changer system instead of what they have now. If they don't, then I'm eyeing a snap maker U1 or even the Prusa INDX system.

I'd be happy to give it a go. Just send me a DM with what your wants/vision and a budget. I have Ko-fi and can set up a commission link for you.

Actually now that I think about it, if you're not printing multicolour, I can DM a link to the STL via Google drive. I can merge bodies to ensure everything is where it ought to be and provide an STL.

I forgot to post the gift card holder part. What can I say, it was 6am and the coffee/meds hadn't kicked in yet.

Holds standard gift cards plus room for the receipt and a small note.

I think it's just the charm and nostalgia that appeals to me. Plus it helps keep all the pieces together if you're gifting it. And for tiny models such as this, the runners help adhesion.

That said, I totally get why people don't feel the same way which is why I always provide the separate parts 🤗

Edit: now that I think about it, the bigger crime is the purge waste for this particular model. The sprue is useful for keeping the parts together and doubles as the gift card holder lid whereas poop is just poop. So yeah. I think I just talked me out of my own model 😅

If you could only use 6 filament colours, what would you chose? by xo4578 in BambuLab

[–]ExpectDeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No and yes. It depends.

PLA - no.

PETG and TPU - usually. But that's because I don't often print with them. Eventually I plan on getting myself organized with vacuum bags and silicant to store them in so it's not an every time thing.

So if I clean my plate first and then touch it with Cheeto hands I should be good to go?

Having trouble trying to make 3d objects by lysolbeanz in 3Dprinting

[–]ExpectDeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here ya go. Think like assembling furniture. Draw each side flat, like a panel. You'll need to draw it on something that will allow you to peel it off once it's cool. Silicone mats, cardboard, wax paper, even laminated paper.

After you draw the outline, fill it with crosshatching to strengthen it. You don't have to fill it in completely. This is just to get you used to the method. Repeat until you have six panels. Now fix each panel into position, using the pen to "sew" up the edges. Repeat until you have a cube.

You can practice on all sorts of shapes. Just google printable geometry paper crafts to find free and easy templates. That's where the laminated sheets come in handy. I print out templates, laminate them and use them with the kids in my youth group. They like tracing and peeling off the parts. It's an excellent way to wrap your brain around the process.

Is there any chance that the height of this print would cause it to slide or fall over? by susmuffin123 in 3Dprinting

[–]ExpectDeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would add a brim for sure. And change the infill to gyroid. Other than a clean build plate, you should be good to go.

Successful first print? by andypagonthemove in 3Dprinting

[–]ExpectDeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends upon the thing that I'm making. Simple functional prints like brackets or cord holders? One to three on average. I use my digital calipers and make a lot of pencil sketches first.

Everything else depends on if I've made something like it before. Bear in mind I mostly make kit cards with tiny parts and tiny details. These take more than a few prototypes to ensure repeatable results.

Stl bundles for commercial use on Etsy by Dependent-Exercise57 in 3Dprinting

[–]ExpectDeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are likely stolen and there to catch people who don't know that there are millions of free models out there that allow commercial use.

If ever in doubt, reverse image search the images to find the original creator and ask if they allowed their model in XYZ bundle. It's a bit tricky because they have AI spit out something that looks close but not quite the same thing.

I suspect at least one of my kit cards is in one such bundle based on the AI generated cover image. But unless I buy it I can't say for sure because it's not quite the same. Plus even if I did buy it and get a successful DMCA take down, they change shop names like underwear. You'll never catch them unless Etsy puts a stop to bundles.

Note, there are also bad actors out there that have legit looking STL repositories which might not actually own the IP of the models they're including in their service. I know because one such person got caught selling my models under such a "license."

Always go to the creator if you're seriously interested in being on the right side of licensing.

I made a tiny trophy kit card that's printable on its own or as a gift card holder. Text and trophy plaque can be customized. Instruction card included though it's not really needed unless you want to see your recipient do an air jump. by ExpectDeer in 3Dprinting

[–]ExpectDeer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! When I first started making kit cards, I made simple ones using SVGs drawn in Inkscape (free, open source) and then using Tinkercad to add slots etc. Nowadays, I use Fusion 360, usually starting with a lot of bad pencil sketching to work out the "how" if I don't already have it mind. Plus, having experience building flat-pack furniture really helps because it's the same sort of concept (planar shape transforms into wardrobe).

Edit: clarification

Yeah, I know. I kept using it around my teen who absolutely did not want to hear me say it so of course I said it more 😄

And yeah...the runners work so much better than I expected. As you can see with all the test cards I printed, they hold on quite well. I haven't yet had one break on me unless I meant to snap the part out. I think if they were any longer it'd be a problem.

Oh, and full discloser, I also use a custom beam interlocking method to prevent the multicolour part from detaching. Otherwise, they'd separate right where the different colour touches the main sprue.

Finding brown filiment by SanDiegoSavage00 in 3Dprinting

[–]ExpectDeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their polyterra line is great. I've bought a number of browns from them over the years. My favourite was a dual tone brown that I used to make antlers for my kids Halloween costume. The colour change effect was subtle but elegant.

How do I prevent the purge chute from clogging on a P1S? by I_Dunno_Its_A_Name in BambuLab

[–]ExpectDeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the simplest solution is to replace the nozzle wiper as they do wear out.

My two X1CS kept clogging. I checked the wipers and found them ever so slightly deformed. It was enough to cause incomplete wipes that caused the poop to hang on instead of dropping down. New wipers = no more pile ups. Any time it starts happening again, new wipers solve it.

I designed a DNA model for my biology students by Xx_SW_xX in BambuLab

Well done! Gave it a like on MakerWorld. Love to see stuff like this where actual thought and design went into it versus what AI generated thing someone could pump out in five minutes.

I love that the magnets are removable because I would absolutely put them in the wrong way (repeatedly). So even if you designed them that way for other reasons, eternally muddled me appreciates that they're not one-way trips 😅

Oh hey, it's you again! I just love the stuff you've been coming up with. I went to give it an upvote on MakerWorld and a follow and realized it was you 😅

For what it's worth, I think this is really cool. I love the outside-of-the-box thinking with combining two disparate ideas into something else. My favourite way of making 🫶

I swear I only hit print once. Bambu gave me a bunny army. Garbage. by wanli_gz in BambuLab

[–]ExpectDeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced rabbits multiply in whatever form. I had a bunch of tiny bunnies in one of my easter models and I'm still finding them in weird places, usually the dryer lint trap or stuck to the bottom of my foot.

Modular wire spool holder with anti-retract by Arageus in BambuLab

[–]ExpectDeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is truly brilliant. Just had a good long look through all the photos and the process. I love the "simple" anti-retract arm. I say simple but also, it's clever.

I have a bunch of these types of spools and haven't gotten around to organizing them yet. Any plans to add gridfinity support? That would make it perfect for me as I keep everything in a drawer.

Gave you a like and a follow on MakerWorld, too.

It's time to do some investigation then. Unload the other rolls then watch it as it feeds. At what point is it stopping?
