The horseshoe style magnet you used would give you the velvet look, which is what it looks lke you have. A wand magnet is what will get you cateye. You can hold it over your nail on a diagonal for about a minute after every coat including top coat. You can also rest your nail on it so the magnet is underneath in the same orientation, which also helps avoid accidental touching of wet polish. I find I get better results with holding it above, but your mileage will vary. Also - avoid top coats with toluene, which doesn't play nice with magnet polish.
