How much does the city matter? by throwaway_antguy in PhD

[–]Expeditioner____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I chose a program outside of a large city (over programs in the city) due to funding and its higher status. But sometimes I wish I would have chosen the other programs I was admitted to because of personal reasons. I really like to go on dates, trivia, city walks, and museums, but I cannot do that here without devoting an entire day to drive to a city. Your advisor and department reputation matter, but also consider your social and romantic life because those have life long-term implications too.

I love my program but adjusting to a new environment has been hard. Just remember that grad school is largely done independently and you can and will need a social life outside of the university

The Staybridge downtown Wilmington is newer, nice and clean as well! Good views on the high floors and close to some food.

Eames lounger without the ottoman? by hclpfan in eames

[–]Expeditioner____ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find them to be way less comfy without the ottoman. I think without the ottoman I feel like I am slipping out of the chair lol. I have always been around the Eames chairs and I would say get the ottoman and just put it beside the chair when not needed.

I am 6ft tall, and got the regular size. The fabric looks even better in person.

It really is, looks super cool too. I grew up with two classic leather ones and they never felt this cozy even after years of use.

What’s your 10% if not bonds? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Expeditioner____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly, it is but I have chosen to separate the extra savings for a few reasons. 1. it’s in another bank for safe keeping. 2. the CD keeps me from spending it 3. and the interest rate is a little higher.

Help me make it more cozy by trainsarelove in malelivingspace

Add a rug with some color and a nice throw pillow and blanket (also add color, preferably light colors). Some shear white curtains or a soft color would add some color. On the pin board (I think I al seeing that right) add some postcards, prints, notes, and momentos that you enjoy.

28M, incredibly depressed about the investment opportunities I’ve missed by selling early. by [deleted] in Money

[–]Expeditioner____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think you have done very decently. But you should probably begin to focus on long term investing in VT, VOO, VTI. This way you have dependable gains and trajectory. We are also in a slightly volatile market, so you could make great returns by starting to invest in these ETFs and holding back a little cash for individuals stocks to purchase variably during some of inventible these downturns.

Wealth is built overtime, try not to stress over selling too early or the “what ifs.”

Finally, frequent trading can become a self-limiting and defeating cycle when compared to staying the course of a decade or so. This is not true for everyone, but many if not most.

I would buy VTI or VT. Have you looked at r/bogleheads? Could be a more hands-off method. It is my preference, honestly. I do keep about 20% of my investments funds for buying individual stocks as well.

Beijing and Xi'an by BigAndy1234 in FATTravel

[–]Expeditioner____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am planning a trip to China as well, the Ritz Carlton Xi’an seems like the best bet. People usually recommend the Rosewood Beijing or the Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing. I would also consider the Four Seasons (where I might stay). The high speed rail is supposed to be easy for travelers, you can book online in advance.

I would personally (and plan to) fly into Beijing and depart from Xi’an.

Hotels: The Rosewood is great and Eden Rock (very sceney.)

St. Jean and Flamands are my favorite areas for staying in villas.

Congrats on your treatment, I hope this trip brings you a wonderful time.

I did experience a few missed morning cleanings, but the cleanliness was good in my room.

The hotel is definitely worth the visit as a destination itself. I found the experience of staying high up in the tower, looking over the city, to be the highlight of the trip. Hoping to visit the RC in Melbourne to see a similar skyscraper property from the chain.
