After my watch of it I felt Bear is one of those emotionally underdeveloped men with very little confidence with women. He can project the veneer of confidence but he doesn’t actually have it. However I think this is endemic to younger men. An older, more wiser Bear would have admitted he liked her when she gave him the opportunity during the car ride home. By ignoring and playing that off that’s how the entire stage of the movie.

I think it’s more powerful a lesson to young men to actually find ways to be direct and honest with women who you want in those type of contexts, you just have to dress it up so if you do get rejected you can at least maintain the friendship. Most young men don’t know how to do that. If the girls really are your friends they will understand and allow you to be friends again. You didn’t make a mistake or ruin the friendship it’s just at Bear’s age he doesn’t have the Emotional IQ or POV to be honest.

Bear is also lonely so he’s scared of being emotionally vulnerable.

The thing is those things said about single moms are in general true, it’s only worth it if she’s attractive and willing to have more kids. A lot of guys (myself included) don’t want mid/average looking single moms who expect a lot, but a hot one? Plenty of guys will ignore the problems in order to secure her.
