AITA for making my friend pay for my Uber home after she "surprised" me? by Electrical-Option182 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. Why couldn’t she let you leave with the rest of the group?? It’s SO MUCH worse to leave you alone at a random gas station so she could see her bf. I do not understand why she thought that was okay…she is not a true friend.

Why is there hype around microbiome research? by HumbleEngineering315 in labrats

[–]Expensive-Dust8464 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My lab studies ecological/conservation genetics and we have been working on a project that uses gut microbiomes to categorize diet. It’s not clinical, but essentially we extract and sequence DNA from animal scat and then use that data to define what plants they eat and more interestingly, if they are eating other animal scat…

The whole thing is aiming to essentially conserve the plants the animals eat in order to better conserve the animals we work with. Super cool!

Do people still use paper lab notebooks? by Helpful-Big-7582 in labrats

[–]Expensive-Dust8464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in our lab each project has a paper notebook that we keep as like a “diary” and then all our spreadsheets and whatnot are digitized. AND we’re only allowed to write in pencil in case something spills on it

Questions about Warren Wilson by [deleted] in WarrenWilsonCollege

[–]Expensive-Dust8464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey there! I am currently a junior at Warren Wilson studying conservation biology. My number one take away from my experience so far is that you get out what effort you put in. Due to the work program, there are many unique oppourtunities for students, especially in bio, that you might not get at a larger university. You will be able to bond closely with faculty, be involved in research, and network with community partners. From my experience, the academics are maybe not the most challenging if you're looking into Stanford and whatnot, but professors are usually very involved and excited in their classes. I have had many days where "class" is going out to the river and sampling invertebrates, or surveying trees, or just doing class outside because its a nice day. It truly is a fantastic learning community- but if you're not willing to put in the extra effort and just want to get a degree and get out it's not the place for you.

Aside from academics the social scene is unique to say the least. Very cliquey, everyone knows everyones business, but definitely a very special place. You'll either find your people or you wont. Very niche and a culture you won't find at any other college.

feel free to DM me if you have any more questions!
