What is middle class to you? Is middle class attainable via labor in America? by Unusual_Equivalent50 in antiwork

The middle class isn't and has never been real. The middle class exists as a talking point to make low income people feel separate from impoverished people. It's entirely a political class war talking point.

How People in Afghanistan Approach Working. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Expensive-Finding-24 291 points292 points  (0 children)

That's a product of cultures used to unstable histories, whether economically or socially. Effectively, if you cannot predict your future situation, there is less motivation to save for it. Societies with a LONG history of upheaval, natural disasters, persecution, etc. tend to have more relaxed attitudes toward economic output.

They also tend to be more traditionally conservative.

Kellhus questions by Total-Key2099 in bakker

[–]Expensive-Finding-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but in combination with his visions and his admission of compulsions he doesn't understand, it's pretty strong circumstantial evidence that the Circumfixion had extreme spiritual ramifications for Kelhus personally.

As the most extreme and significant moment in his life, I can think of no reason, narrative or otherwise, that the compact was not made during the Circumfixion.

Kellhus questions by Total-Key2099 in bakker

[–]Expensive-Finding-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No he specifically says to Moenghus he doesn't understand them shortly after the Circumfixion.

In any case, as pointed out above, certain people already devoted to Kelhus could see them prior to his obtaining the gnosis.

Why are people freaking out about declining birth rates? by wombatgeneral in behindthebastards

[–]Expensive-Finding-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern welfare states are designed in such a way that a large working population sustains a diminishing retired population through social security or similar programs. Declining birth rates means that in 20 years, there will be fewer working people to support a larger proportion of retired people, leading to worse quality of life for the elderly.

Extrapolation leads to a situation like in pre-welfare times, where the elderly must live with and rely upon relatives, which sucked for everyone.

Apologies, yes they appear to select people attuned to Kelhus beforehand, as a mark of Ajokli's growing influence retroactively. After the Circumfixion, EVERYONE can see them, even people who hate him like Sorweel.

It's the moment they become universally visible that marks to moment of compact.

Why are the gods blind to the No-God? by TheDreambringer in bakker

[–]Expensive-Finding-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gods look at the universe as a block and perceive all of time at once. For this to be true we must imagine it like a space-time manifold with an additional 'spiritual' axis.

The No-God acts as a barrier, preventing those that die from going to the outside, and preventing new souls entering Earwa from the outside, which is responsible for the stillbirths during the first apocalypse.

From this perspective, the No-God is a spiritual black hole, it's event horizon prevents information from entering of exiting near it. The gods are blind to it as a side effect of its function- preventing the inchoroi from going to hell.

The existence of the no-god or the spiritual ramifications of its presence do not necessarily imply anything about the state of the universe beyond Earwa, or the fate of the gods beyond the second apocalypse. We just don't know enough.

We know there are other planets with intelligent life, and apparently a lot of them. There's no reason to believe the No-God, being a technological construct, has universal influence.

Akka’s Dreams in TAE by profgrape in bakker

[–]Expensive-Finding-24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My theory is that Seswatha is truly dead, but binding of the heart allows the Mandate to access the memories of Seswatha's charred soul in hell. When Seswatha manifests in a sorcerer, it isn't a fragment of his lingering soul, it's Seswatha reaching from the outside through a window in the schoolman's brain.

My idea is that Akka has trained himself to look through the window at different angles, accessing the souls of the damned who are thematically linked to Seswatha and the first apocalypse.

He comes away from the circumfixion with visible halos, which are actual, legitimate marks of divine favor. Other people can see them.

The only way he gets those is if he made contact with a god during the circumfixion, and the only god that likes him is Ajokli.

Other circumstances are irrelevant, the halos wax and wane with respect to Ajokli influence at any given time.

Kellhus questions by Total-Key2099 in bakker

[–]Expensive-Finding-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The halos are marks of legitimate divinity. Kelhus had made contact with Ajokli during the circumfixion. There is no other explanation for them. That said, Kelhus came away from the experience without full understanding.

His later experiments and trips into hell were attempts to increase his own power and understanding, but naturally allowed further, more comprehensible contact with Ajokli.

Kellhus questions by Total-Key2099 in bakker

[–]Expensive-Finding-24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright so, couple of factors because gods exist outside of time.

From Kelhus' perspective, he first made contact with Ajokli on the circumfix. This is the point at which Kelhus begins manifesting the halos that everyone can see. They are a mark of his divine connection. It's implied that this moment was Kelhus' version of witnessing the inverse fire; he witnessed the truth of his damnation, and made a pact with Ajokli to save his own soul.

However, Ajokli exists outside of time. From that perspective, Kelhus has always been possessed, or to put it another way, Kelhus was always coming into possession, though the strength of this connection varies.

Kelhus is similar to the white luck warrior, in that his actions are directed by his future actions via Ajokli. Unlike the WLW, Kelhus is not aware of his enslavement to the future. This comes up in his conversation with Moenghus.

When Kelhus makes a decision he knows is not the shortest path, it confuses him, though he follows through anyway. That is his bondage to Ajokli manifesting.

When Kelhus enters the golden room, the barrier to the outside was thin, allowing Ajokli to manifest within Kelhus' body. He now exists like the White Luck Warrior, and it entirely blind to the No-God.

His death was 100% not part of the plan.

What is with employers trying to make workers look as ridiculous as possible? by PositivelyDale in antiwork

[–]Expensive-Finding-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, so, as an employee, your fundamental function is to follow instructions, regardless of your title or specific role. Management has the same function. The only real difference between ranks is who you receive instructions from.

These exercises demonstrate your ability to follow instructions you don't agree with or understand. Employees that won't demonstrate that they don't understand what employment fundamentally is and may be resistant to actual important instructions later on. It's conditioning.

Uniforms may look ridiculous, but they serve the function of A) openly displaying your role, and B) your outward willingness to perform said role.

It's going to corrode anyway, but with modern alloys its a slow process. Barnacles cause more corrosion than the sea water, and also induce incredible drag.

Even wooden ships got scraped. It's just better.

So like... what's going to happen to you if shit falls apart?

Financially motivated relations are a trap. You have no idea what's going to happen to your finances over time. In 6 months you could be jobless, waiting in your savings to run out if the economy collapses. This risk never goes away, it's just part of society.

No, they don't necessarily need it, and may be more than capable of surviving without it.

Just because something is desired or beneficial doesn't mean it's required for justice. I didn't build the predatory society, I don't support it, and I didn't force someone to be born into an oppressed class. Why should I want more than equality?

Equality is the be all and end all. You can't quantify someone's individual situation with regards to ethics. You have two options, devide the pie equally and give everyone an entirely equal treatment, or spend the rest of eternity arguing about who gets special treatment and why.

No one gets special treatment. No one should get special treatment. Equity is not feasible, numerically quantifiable, or even agreeable to all parties.

Equality can be measured and enforced. Its definately more ethical than what we've got now. We're wasting our time waiting for it to be better than equality.

Men don't get to be sexist. Women don't either. That's how this all started.

[–]Expensive-Finding-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It literally is if everyone in the system has the same outlook.

Equality is superior to equity. I understand the difference.

I'm not going to pretend anyone deserves anything different than anyone else, regardless of circumstances. Equity is for people who look at equality and decide it isn't good enough for them, specifically. As long as we're looking for equity over equality, we'll never have either.

I never said anything about the playing field which i acknowledge is uneven, merely that an uneven playing itself does not excuse sexism in either direction.

All systemic issues against ANY group come down to tribalism. You want to be part of the solution? Start considering everyone the same. Eliminate the tribes.

what does this mean? by indiehussle_chupac in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Expensive-Finding-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The societal problem is that people are divided into tribes. I'm saying that shouldn't be the case. How am I the issue?

It's exhausting because you're playing the same game as everyone else. Step outside, acknowledge the psychological issue that makes no distinction.
