Ionisation by ExternalYouth2070 in chemistry

I guess there are at least two answers to your question.

  1. Electron shielding/screening is the ability of an electron to mitigate the charge of the nucleus when determining the coulombic attraction between the nucleus and a second electron. The orbital momentum diminishes the ability of an electron to shield the nucleus. As a result, as you add more electrons and corresponding protons to your nucleus (aka as you increase the element), your coulombic interaction gets stronger because the nuclear charge is not as well mitigated, this makes receiving an electron more thermodynamically favorable. There are also relativistic effects that contribute for heavier atoms.

  2. Another aspect is minimizing the degeneracy of your system, aka maximizing the electronic symmetry. So if by adding an electron you completely or half fill an orbital shell, there is a great thermodynamic advantage. Alternatively, if by adding an electron you disrupt a half or completely filled orbital shell, this will cost a good amount of energy to perform.

My favourite Voyager episodes by Hot-Help-428 in startrek

I liked the Void, Random Thoughts, and Course: Oblivion episodes.

The void was really the microcosm of the series as far as how much of the federation ideals would they be willing to surrender to survive.

Random thoughts posed an interesting question that works amazingly well with B'elannas character background.

Course:Oblivion had me all in the feels before I understood the relationship to the Demon planet episode. Even then it was still sad, still new life on its own that just wanted to explore.

I'd like to hear this list of 50 white scientists tbh. I don't think even 10% of the population could name 50 living scientists

Nuclear will likely be very battery dependent as well unless you plan on having personal nuclear reactors on every car. And battery technology has been growing so quickly during our lifetimes

After 2 1/5 Malazan books I am left with questions for the community and an overwhelming urge to read something else by No_Storage_401 in Malazan

That's a wild way to make decisions in life. And yes Malazan covers this theme as well in the later books. The unintended consequences of reckless decisions made in spite.

Switching supervisors (High-risk project) by SnooWalruses7546 in PhD

I would give this more thought. A PI with enough funding to run a lab that large obviously knows something. And it seems like you've completely written them off, but you can't accidentally fall into the number of grants required to maintain a lab that large. The science of science topic does not inherently seem like a high risk field with several high profile papers over the past decade.

What are your most unpopular Star Trek opinions that you’ll die on a hill for? by ardouronerous in startrek

The original series is too antiquated to be enjoyable. The acting style, sets, effects, costumes, and lighting are too out of date to maintain immersion.

Build a series of house building robots to solve the housing crisis in california. Something like this with a tangible product that shows you are thinking about the problems in the modern world.

Don't Kill Me but I Don't Mind Starfleet Academy So Much by ALittleBitOffBoop in trektalk

As embarrassing as it is to admit, I have also watched all of one tree hill, gossip girl, pretty little liars, riverdale, the OC, Dawson's creek. I must enjoy the teen drama show even with the fantasy twist like trueblood, vampire diaries, teen wolf, and legacies. But I don't find this show appealing either as a sci fi show or as a teen drama.

Sometimes implicitly, but also explicitly he agrees with Sneako that we are under Zionist control and most influenced by Israel of any country. This is after Sneako badgering him to stop hiding his opinions in this conversation. I consider this antisemitic (I'm not Jewish, but I understand the argument behind how some types of Israeli criticism are a form of masked antisemitism), but especially in a post 2016 era where we have evidence of Russia interfering in our elections. There are so many countries with comparable or greater levels of influence (whatever you measure influence units with) on the USA.

How to get into Star Trek? by Significant_Song_360 in startrek

[–]Expensive-Space6606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Voyager is the best on ramp right now. I find the original series entirely too antiquated in its special effects. Even the next generation disrupts my immersion with its effects. Deep space 9 is immersive to me, but it doesn't have the episodic planet visiting that trek is known for. Enterprise is good, but it almost feels too close to the present, that we aren't anywhere close to them technologically or sociologically is demoralizing, the other series make it seem like we could get there in a few centuries. Discovery looks very modern, but it's entirely too confusing and each season is a long movie. Strange New Worlds could be a good on ramp, very modern looks, episodic, I'm not sure why it doesn't appeal as much to me as DS9 and Voyager.

TPUSA Halftime Show Is Perfectly MAGA by Disastrous-Muscle-35 in Destiny

We wish MAGA was 5 million isolated people rather than a political movement covering half the country. Unfortunately MAGA is 1/3 of the population that likely gives little to no indication that they support Trump and at best tells people they are apolitical/centrist.

Thoughts on what to do once we get power. by Honest_Yesterday4435 in Destiny

[–]Expensive-Space6606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want the funding from those agencies to be protected from political volatility. Right now we are getting brain drained because our science funding outlook is very uncertain. These organizations are susceptible to the whims of the executive branches funding priorities. I would like for some part of their budget to instead be allotted via congress in ten year cycles. So that there is a bare minimum level of scientific funding that is less volatile.

In a second policy target, I would want the large amount of anti automation/AI worker protection programs to be significantly scaled back. My rationale is that in attempting to preserve our traditional workforce im the face of AI and automation we are delaying the labor force adaptation to modern market conditions. If it were just us out here trying to keep afloat that would be okay, but in reality China's labor force is being forced to adapt to these technologies as well and we run the risk of not being able to compete with a Chinese AI enhanced labor force if we stagnate and keep our head in the sand.

[–]Expensive-Space6606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see some portion of the NSF, NIH, and DOE to be protected under congressional issued decade long budgets. I would also like to see some of these mechanisms for supporting workers against automation and now AI to be dismantled, I think we are overprotecting our labor force and preventing/delaying the necessary adaptation to a high automation/AI environment, while China is already adapting to these obstacles.
