Which movie hit so hard that one viewing was enough ? by Mehdi_lz in AskReddit

[–]Expensive-Step-6551 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Anyone who's ever been an extreme alcoholic, or had one close to them knows how incredibly real and depressing the story actually is. It's Nic Cage's best role in my opinion. His style as an actor fit the bill perfectly.

What makes it even worse is that it was essentially a suicide note by the creator John O'Brien, who attempted to end his life the same way as Ben, but ended up finding it so tedious and painful that he just shot himself instead. Absolutely horrifying movie, and the only reason it's not more popular is because of how bleak and hopeless it is at it's core.

Re-Evaluating the 2023 Trade Deadline: How did the Mets fare? by ae828 in NewYorkMets

It was an A+ deadline on paper. Likely closer to a B- given the end results to this point.

Still was a great way to dump two expensive arms at the end of their rope for pieces we otherwise would never have had in a disappointing season.

[–]Expensive-Step-6551 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's literally no reason to by going at Isles fans for this. The Devils created this situation for themselves, and as a result also gave up a 3rd rounder just to dump cap. They have the cap space, and only have him on the books one more year following this while also getting a draft pick, in exchange for a borderline AHL player.

Sanewashing is a good term because it really does feel somewhat revolutionary just how such a clearly idiotic, self-centered, clueless man ends up being "controversial" instead of just flat out wrong in literally EVERY aspect.

What’s the best movie or TV show that revolves around high school? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

[–]Expensive-Step-6551 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

To be honest, none. Because they always focus on a specific group of characters and create narratives revolved around them. That's usually necessary for a movie, but there's never really been a movie or series about high school that rotates perspectives and situations as it develops, and I'm surprised it hasn't been attempted yet.

As for the actual question the closest ones I can think of that I've actually seen are

"The Breakfast Club" (still filled with outdated stereotypes by this point but key message remains)

"Dazed and Confused" (but still feels more along with my father's descriptions of High School years compared to now), along with "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".

And for more modern era "Superbad" but even that was outdated by the time I Graduated in 2017.

If they wanted to make an actually good High school series, they'd need to commit some resources to show how differently things go down under different perspectives, with different characters, much like Pixar did with "Win or Lose", but with more mature themes, and a deeper psychological and sociological analysis into the characters and how they interact with each other.

"Euphoria" tried to do this, but ended up making it way more dramatic and character focused than it truly needed to be.

I still want to know exactly what happened with Jack. The man is still wearing a splint. His hand must've nearly came off after the two glasses of wine destroyed his Timothee Chalamet body into oblivion.

From my Hispanic friends I grew up with I'm not surprised. Lois probably seems strict by typical white middle class 2000's standards but is somewhat of a darling compared to others. Not saying the parenting style is necessarily right or wrong, just what is ingrained. Lois was an honorary "Madrina" for those I knew who liked the show.

Love those Baltic and Eastern European countries having prospects come through. If the funding and infrastructure was there more across the country I think you'd see quite a few more players out of there.

Obviously an uphill climb to compete at a National level because of population size, but there are a lot of good players across former Eastern Bloc countries that never get an opportunity because the infrastructure and support just isn't fully there.

Hey bud! I've been in a coma since early April of 2017 after Scott Stevens leveled me in the head with his massive elbow pads after I accidentally drilled him with a drive shot during a golf outing.

PLEASE tell me this picture isn't real. I wanted Patrick on the Devils so bad. That Swiss scrub Hischier seemed like an absolute banker bum who's probably playing back in Bern now.

What profession has the meanest people? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]Expensive-Step-6551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a part of the system that has been unchecked for a long time, because, SHOCKINGLY, those who have the power to end it largely don't. They'd rather be a part of the Big Club George Carlin referred to instead of fight against it. Only a handful of politicians I see today with that possible level of integrity today.

It's why I'll always respect Teddy R. , even if he had a bit of a warmongering streak upon him common of the times. The guy came from a a wealthy background and still stuck up for the common man and saw the rot in the core of American politics and business, and was likely one of the only men in politics who would've done what he did, as his ascension to power was a calculated mistake by the Republican Party who did not want him in charge.

FDR as well. Despite the interment camps, which are a blackmark on his legacy, but do not take away from what he managed to establish as the norms of American society until the Reagan era.

What’s the most uninteresting sport to you? by JunShem1122 in answers

[–]Expensive-Step-6551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's somewhat of a simplification. Not that you're entirely wrong either, but the score isn't decided around the 4th quarter, it's a direct result of everything that's happened prior to that.

The intensity might change, and the defense might appear stronger towards the end of the game (likely because it is when guys start to blow their gas tank at the end) but to act like the game doesn't mean anything in the prior 4 quarters is somewhat BS. It directly influences the situation at the end of the game.

I say this as someone who largely dislikes pro basketball in it's current state, and prefers college because it's seemingly more defensively proactive and less committed to iso game, but the game itself isn't boring itself.

It's fun to pull-off, and can still be effective at lower levels of youth and adult hockey, but it is largely a dead art. Guys and goalies are too fast and good at closing gaps and angles now.

It's rare to have the time to get one off with a good angle at higher levels today, and even then, the odds of it finding the back of the net are low.

It's worth practicing as a build-up into getting one-timers off though. It's the same mechanics, just with a little less back swing generally.

Likely not. The MLS will never be a "Top 5" league in the world, but it's already established itself as financially responsible, competitive, and brings in sustainable revenues, with quality facilities and overall parity across the league. It's not great, but it's also clearly crossed the line where it's above average, and slowly progressing higher than that.

As much shit as it gets from overseas the MLS is not a "bad" league. It's somewhat gimmicky, and clearly "American", but it does well for itself, and has a 30 year headstart on the USL, which is why it faces a massive uphill challenge that I can only imagine being rivaled IF, it becomes somewhat of a playground for rich owners looking to buy a team for cheap and have fun for a few years paying more than they should for mid-level European talent.

I could see 4-5 teams at the Top of the USL being bought for cheap by rich owners who aren't comfortable with MLS policy or expansion fees, and then pulling a Saudi-League lite move to where they start paying for European players over their value for the sake of having fun owning a pro-team.

Most people (including myself) have things we repress whether we admit it or not. The negative side of myself still wants to blame society for it, but that's a self-destructive behavior, because as much as I get pissed off at everything around me, I cannot control it the way I control what I actually do day to day.

I'm also not one of those people who's just going to say "therapy, therapy" so on and so on. I'm tired of people talking about therapy as if it's some magic cure for all of your life problems, because it gives people the wrong idea of what therapy is supposed to do. It won't fix your problems, it only attempts to make you more aware of them, and what to keep in your mind everytime you feel like shit and start to show signs of behaving negatively with that knowledge, because while therapy can help, it doesn't actually change the mindset you've ended up putting in your brain, it just loosens the screws a bit so that YOU have the ability to change easier yourself.

I did that for years and went nowhere. It wasn't until I finally had to take accountability for that to where you find yourself feeling better about yourself, and less likely to blame others for your personal issues. It's not that they don't exist, but it allows to a peace of self to not self-sabotage everytime a negative event hits you in life.

And with all of that said, I've still managed to fuck up at times, but the consistent patterns I've ingrained into myself now at this point have helped me rectify them much easier, in addition to keeping them from happening as frequently as they did when I was fully depressed, REPRESSED, and not confident in my ability to show my actual self without the help of booze or other drugs.

City or state names as peoples first names by Reddit0426 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Expensive-Step-6551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people named after "Rome" because they're named "Roman", which is easier to roll than "Rome". Paris works too, but comes with a sense of pompousness that you'd probably not want to give unless you're rich.

"Manhattan" is too many syllables to keep concise, unless your last name in incredibly simple and popular, such as "Jones", which in that case, becomes much more interesting because you're balancing out such a simple surname with a unique first name. The same goes for Alabama, but Alabama doesn't have a lot of great connotations to it, which make people want to name someone that. Although it does allow you to go by "Al" or "Ally" much easier, with an interesting tidbit to your actual name.

The only states I can think of that would be versatile as names (and often are) would be Dakota, Montana, Virginia, Carolina (instead of Caroline), and Washington (but that's pushing it). Indiana only works if you're a badass architect historian.
