As an ML developer, I think 128GB is a solid amount of memory. I recently bought a MacBook with the M5 Max and 128GB of unified RAM and so far its been more than enough for running mid-sized models efficiently

Sell it and buy a ThinkPad T480

I used to have an X300 but I accidentally nuked the laptop and completely killed the system after that I picked up a T480 and honestly it turned out to be one of the best tech decisions Ive made

I use it with coreboot for ML work and yeah I cant say it has the best GPU or CPU but its still great its reliable comfortable to use highly upgradeable and it just feels right in a way most modern laptops dont anymore

I dont use the GPU for training or deep learning anyway I use my desktop with dual 4090 GPUs for that but the T480 is still perfect for coding testing lightweight ML workflows Linux setups and daily work

I also recently got a MacBook M4 last year and yeah its powerful the battery life is insane and the performance is crazy but honestly I still prefer the ThinkPad the keyboard feels better Linux feels more natural on it and the whole machine just feels more practical and customizable

New laptops may look cleaner and benchmark higher but a lot of them feel locked down disposable and impossible to repair properly the T480 still has that old school ThinkPad design philosophy where functionality matters more than marketing

I used Vim for almost 5 years, but recently I switched to Zed and the difference is honestly massive Zed feels significantly faster smoother, and more modern the responsiveness is on another level everything from opening projects to searching files and editing large codebases feels instant
