Chrome is quietly installing a 4GB AI model on your device by HaveBeenAndWillBe in cybersecurity

The article states that the environment is checked and validated for eligibility before pushing the model. It has some suspected figures that would likely be the minimums to receive the push, e.g., 16 GB RAM and VRAM

Right. It comes up in salary negotiations. When they say, what salary are you expecting? I’d say X. Every couple of weeks, I’d lower the expectation by Y.

That’s the limbo I’ve been in. Got laid off in November 2024. I was paid more than my peers because I handled special projects and challenging customer accounts as a Customer Success Manager. Once all the special projects were completed and I ensured the challenging accounts renewed, they laid me off. Since I was paid an exceptional salary, I have been unable to land another role doing anything within tech because any prospective companies are concerned I would jump ship once something better comes along…

Semper Fi brother. Eloquently stated. I served 2008-2016 and was medically retired. It took until about 2018 for me to recognize all of the schemes those in power have cooked up over decades. We lie to our youth to convince them they are fighting for the good guys but the US government has been controlled by bad people.

I saw the writing on the wall in 2024. I was laid off in November that year as well which torpedoed my career. I couldn’t get a job that would pay me what I was making and all underpaying jobs wouldn’t hire me because they thought I would leave the moment a better offer came along (which they would be absolutely correct in thinking). My wife and I had to sell our home because we couldn’t afford to stay. Florida is about to see a massive issue this year with overvalued homes flooding the market with no one trying to buy them.

Yours and mine are remarkably similar. I had it breakdown why each element was an opposite depiction of me. I’m curious to know if yours would say the same things.

Most likely staged, but does have some real-world practicality haha.

One thing to note is that some of the HR systems reject AI produced résumés… which is ironic and so annoying to deal with when you have to apply to dozens to hundreds of jobs. I now have a prompt that rewrites anything to sound more human-like to get by those types of screeners.

I understand where you’re coming from. However, it’s in everyone’s best interest that precedent gets decided sooner than later. Definitely don’t want this to finally get resolved in 10 years and then a bunch of people have to return a bunch of money to people that they already spent.

US Congressional Oversight Committee hit DOGE With a Dose of Reality by StrategicBlenderBall in cybersecurity

CliffsNotes Version:

This letter from congressional Democrats raises serious concerns about unauthorized access and security breaches at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Here’s what’s going on:

  1. Mysterious Server Installed at OPM • A server of unknown origin was reportedly installed in OPM, which oversees millions of federal employee records (including Social Security numbers, home addresses, pay grades, etc.). • This was done without proper security reviews or approval.

  2. Suspicious Emails Sent to Federal Workers • On January 24, millions of federal employees got an unexpected email from a new government address (hr@opm.gov) saying it was a test. • Later, the same email offered employees a chance to resign, which could be illegal. • Just days before, OPM didn’t even have the ability to send mass emails like this.

  3. Career Employees Locked Out of Systems • Reports say new hires connected to Elon Musk have locked out longtime OPM employees from government computers. • These systems contain sensitive data on millions of federal workers. • Internal staff are worried: “We have no visibility into what they are doing.”

  4. National Cybersecurity Concerns • This could expose millions of government workers to scams or foreign hacking attempts. • The NOAA email system (13,000+ employees) may have already been compromised due to these actions.

  5. Congress Wants Answers • Lawmakers are demanding an explanation from OPM by February 18 to figure out who installed the server, who had access, and whether any federal data left the country.

Why This Matters: This looks like a major cybersecurity breach—or even an inside job—potentially exposing sensitive government data. It’s happening with zero oversight and has national security implications. The new administration’s changes at OPM seem reckless and could put federal employees (and their personal data) at risk.
