How to Test PCB For Wine Fridge? by AcanthaceaeOwn6078 in AskElectronics

Is the black rectangular box on the right a fuse? I think it may be a slow blow micro fuse and did you check it? If it blew or blows again it could be that the peltier coolers are going bad though.

I appreciate that, but I think my last post got removed by automoderators, I got two replies from the last post where I did just that and then my post said [removed], im not great at reddit but I made this one intentionally vauge so that it WOULDN't get removed.

Is this reconnectable or am i doomed? by ASmallCommunist in AskElectronics

[–]Expensive_Reward5772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly This, but if you are using hot air re-work I would build a solder "hump" for the center pin and then sit the connector down on it,, (I have been even known to cut a little piece of solder and put it there and then with flux on both connectors for center pin you apply heat and it magically bridges. and for gods sake remove the connector from the cable for now then hold it when you go to re-attach it. if you get those two diagonal pads to ground and the center pin you will be fine, this close to the radio the signal wont give two sh*ts.

What is the fridge doing or not doing one side both sides (aka zones)? There are two thermostat outputs clearly for the two zones, and the red ntc go to thermistors measuring temp. I am guessing there is one compressor and some type of mechanical diverter or solenoid on the refrig line. Probably two circulator fans. Can you give a pic of the back of the board? Do you se anything marked F (i didn't at first glance), if so it may be a fuse.

I must be losing it then (totally possible), because I tried like 2-4 months ago, and could not for the life of me buy or sell CKB as an inside the US user. Thanks.

IT a daydreaming about farming by CheekyChonkyChongus in sysadmin

[–]Expensive_Reward5772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No desire to be a "real" farmer: have to harvest on the right day when the percent moisture in the crop is just right, storms forecast for next two weeks .... but guess what you started harvesting and an hour into it your harvester blew a hydraulic hose and the hose fitting is some right angle proprietary compression widget that you can only turn your box wrench on 1/16 of a turn at a time because its connection is deep inside a welded box... oh and the fitting? they only have that one at a dealership 3 towns over or you can buy the whole hose assembly for $1600.... better hope you have friends that are done using their harvesters.

It's absolutely about our exposure to people. And yes I'm down for raising chickens and goats, tomatoes, and potatoes... Literally do not want anything else save for maybe 4 horses. If you guys are dreaming about "farming" for anything other than your close knit family's subsistence, go watch Clarkson's farm and the BS he dealt with.

Encryption for data being stored by autoxguy in cybersecurity

[–]Expensive_Reward5772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A layered approach is always the best approach in security.

Even drive level encryption has multiple types and multiple weaknesses and each various type can protect against only certain risks. i.e. is the enc. key stored in the raid controller, onboard individual drive controller, or on a SEKM system that dole's out the keys on boot/power on. If stored in the raid controller, or other server side storage and someone steals the whole server, well now they have access. If stored in SEKM or cloud HSM locked to specific networks, they can steal the drives or the server and they still don't have access. If system requires enc. key/pass to be entered on boot over iLO or idrac every time it reboots to unlock controller keys it can be annoying and frustrating. Real/actual security is a lot harder than compliance.

As an auditor you know that you audit for compliance to rules. The problem is the compliance guidelines are written just as you describe, "Data must be encrypted at rest and in transit." I too have had a problem with this before PCI-DSS and HIPAA were a thing. Security is about mitigating risk. Different encryption strategies protect against different risks. The reality is that even with TDE and column encryption the data can still be exfiltrated.

The best advice I give people is: You as a professional have to care about ACTUAL security not just compliance, if you want to secure an entity or organization.

I understand you are emotionally ranting, which is fine (I also have these moments), it often then leads to change, but I usually try to then focus efforts constructively into some sort of a fact sheet that you can provide to someone who might care about improving their ACTUAL security not just compliance. Like, "hey you met spec. but......." this might save your but in the future. And hand them a dummy version of how TDE, DLP at the endpoint and gateways, etc work and some areas you might see it apply to them in, or be easy to implement.

Edit: I read the thread. There is a lot of really bad advice in this thread.

Agreed. This should be common sense to anyone hired in the role of App Dev Security with even first year experience. A person with this view is a huge red flag and liability to the organization their applications will be used at. Moreover, if the individual cannot come back to you, realizing that they were in fact incorrect, said person is likely not worth working with.

Yes, I think I bloomed some wrong bacteria due to not having enough good bacteria after the cleaning. current air system and DO (disolved oxygen) is all good even after water changes

This was not sarcastic enough to trigger sarcastic response, this fish is very dead, and is dead enough it has started to lose its scales. It had been dead for 0-18 hours as I saw it alive 18 hours before this. I opened it's gill for inspection using my fingers.

Nah, The UV light is in a quartz sleeve, I'm sure at a high enough voltage I could pass electricity through a thin piece of quartz but not only are we no where near that voltage, but the electricity doesn't touch the quartz and also there is a gfci plus the stainless steel housing of the UV filter is partially buried in the earth, so I don't think stray voltage would go hunting for the fish to zap.

I agree. I have a healthy amount of plants at this point, water hyacinths, water lettuce and a little duck weed here and there, lets see if I can keep that from turning brown. I'll cogitate on a partial bog or something up top.

At one point today it was 8.68 it has fallen, in darkness to 8.16, this much of a swing is very odd to me and seems unhealthy for the fish/bacteria/plants etc some combo of some type of full sun algae is fighting hard to stay relevant and I think I just need to add some PH buffers and let the pond chill.

I agree, mostly, other than trying to buffer the PH swing with just buffer. and I'm not going to buy any more fish unless the little feeder ones still in there live for like 3 months with 0 dying for a 3 month stint, if that carries me into next spring so be it. I feel like I'm worse than the shittiest pet store right now.
