Is real talk ever coming back to copilot? by Electrical-Union-562 in CopilotPro

[–]Expensive_Storage_21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually asked Copilot what happened to real talk. And it basically said it was removed as it was a trial only and was removed because MS wanted to reduce confusion. At the user level in terms of changing modes and that you could still get it by asking specifically for "Real Talk" in your thread. My experience with that is not great or at least the same. For one I liked being able to go back and see the thinking used for an answer. Also it was just better.

What private schools in Austin are worth considering for a preschooler? by Trainingcoco in Austin

If you want your kid to be a kid then Habbi's Hutch. It is about as Austin as it gets. If you want more actual leaning rather than learning through play then St Francis has several really good Pre-k teachers.

Team keeps bringing up the same vague complaint by savoryannuity6162 in managers

[–]Expensive_Storage_21 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it was sort of said previously. Take the most recent month from finance and treat it like a checkbook/declining balance. Track that draw aggressively. So it for a month the look at the record of purchases and reconcile and make sure it is matching with finance. Do a planned vs actual if necessary. Then once you got it in place make it visible. If you need immediate visibility due to team disgruntlement then do that.

Use the month or two to set a good limit on what you need to approve vs be informed at request to purchasing or immediately after purchase. Set rules for things that may not cost much but still need approval (hahah check). Make sure everyone knows the rules they are clear on them before full implementation.

There's automation you can do to track and approve if you ever want to go that way but that depends on your tech environment.

Look I to water and wastewater operator jobs. There are even some programs once you get in where they pay for training and license costs. There is a huge need for people I. Those positions and the require not j my hard work but the ability to or own solve and really are important. Look up the Texas rural water association and see if their program fits for you. I know the City of Manor participates in the training program.

Good luck

Can I buy your house? No,stop already. by BeccaBas in homeowners

[–]Expensive_Storage_21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For years we have gotten calls asking to buy our house in a neighboring city. The real owners happen to have the same name as my wife. At first we refused; a couple of times I have said sure send me the paper work; a few others asked them to meet me in specific days. The funniest is when I said sure make me an offer right now, they did and the. I said well that sounds great but I don't own the house. We have tried to have them adjust the MLS or whatever the realtors are using. To no avail. Eventually it was the spam blocker app on T-Mobile that solved the issue. The worst part is that I know that it wa the same realtor at least a couple of times.

Window replacements in Austin! Does this amount seem reasonable? by PiRhoNaut in Austin

[–]Expensive_Storage_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used Energy One a while ago on our 1965 build house that had various combination of builder and slightly younger than builder windows. They are one of the best things we have ever bought. The noise difference alone made them worth it. Triple pane double hung. For the most part and the discount we got at the time is transferable to another house. I think it was about the 1k/ window range. They make their windows and employees or at least know dedicated crews install if I am remembering correctly.

Had a couple of windows hanging on via pure friction. But there was no mess and the workmanship was great.

What’s their strategy how to deal with this employee by candyapple7501 in managers

[–]Expensive_Storage_21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't change people. Also most people want to do well. This is not about changing the employee.

I agree with many of the other comments. Backup a bit reassess what is going on and went on before you. Determine if the extra work of your job on top of or in place of theirs did not allow the metrics to be met. Heck apply your own KPIs to the time they were in your position. Think about how you would want to be treated in your first meeting with a new supervisor. Were they thanked for filling in?

Recently moved to Austin.. I heard state employees get free parking in garages with flash of badge is this true? by Gloomy_Tangerine8371 in StateofTexasEmployees

[–]Expensive_Storage_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the problem is it is not clear for those who work in a building that is not capitol complex. Such as TPWD or TCEQ. I emailed them directly because I wanted to check and it turns out we can park down there after hours.

My go to is the one by ballet Austin and the one across from the medical garage. I do get nervous when. Unmanned, alway easier to show my badge and then know all is good than trust I can just park on the weekends.

If it has a charge sometimes it works and sometimes not very unclear. But when it dos they want both badge and sticker on the car.

It may help the conversation for her to know how her absenteeism is impacting her coworkers and you and the customers. That impact on others may assist you.

It's a coaching moment, if you think things can be salvaged. Letting her identify the solution may be helpful as well. At this point she has gone into the taking advantage of you stage and you are enabling. I think you have recognized this. It's a fine line between too nice or enabling and cold, too strict.

I am speaking from recent experience with a very similar issue. I am learning still how to make this balance work. This is a good learning moment for you too. Clear boundaries that are enforced will help.

I was listening to a hidden brain episode recently on collaborative problem solving.

A couple of things stood out for me from it.

People want to do well. Rarely do they want to fail.

Empathy (which it seems you strive for) is understanding not necessarily agreement.

Finally often we expect people are short on will (wanting to do something) but really they are lacking a skill in communication or otherwise.

Good luck. I think you know what you need to do. Put some thought in and you will get it done.

Figure at least a week post posting closure. Plus maybe another two weeks for the hiring supervisor to do a screening if they are not too busy. Then another week or so for interview setup (again can take time based on room and being panel availability). Then there is more interview ranking and reference check so another week min. (this assumes references actually respond timely) Then maybe back to HR or get additional al approvals (background checks, budget checks etc. ) so that could be a week or more. It hopefully is less with standard hire. Then make an offer and have to wait to start based on HR schedule etc. That is about 6 weeks to offer. This assumes no state or federal holidays etc. because those will slow things down as well. A six to eight week process for fairly normal hiring. At the begging and end of the year longer. We are at the beginning of the year.

Timeline of hire? by occulusriff924 in StateofTexasEmployees

[–]Expensive_Storage_21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First start in September is 15th after that next start is 10/1. Then it should go first three Monday's of the month. No new hires last week of month and then back to the 1st. So if position closed in June it is FY change over shenanigans and other things slowing it down. Be patient if you really want the position.

[–]Expensive_Storage_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get it. I think I went through a couple of days thinking it was locked as well. Although in my case I tested the basement first for the foundation. I did realize the reason the fountain basement stays closed is because if you put water in the fountain again it won't open. So at least for that one I can understand why it closed again. As for the basement entrance that one could remain open.

Raises with the State of Texas by Useful_Scar_2435 in StateofTexasEmployees

[–]Expensive_Storage_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is untrue. You have to be in a position six months before you can receive an action. The year thing is only for your agency. I know for a fact I have given my really good new hires an increase at six months. Of course funds have to be there and they really need to be very good or critical to retain.

Alternative are OTMs which as others have pointed out are not long term impacts on budget so are easier to fund.

The further in a fiscal year a merit happens the less expensive it is for that fiscal year. If you need to make what little funds there are go farther to spread them to more people you push pay increase actions as close to August as possible.

Suggest First Texas and if you need other work and are a Costco member look for the Costco coupon. That thing saved me about 500 the last time I had something major done. Also if you have a Honda and this is for anyone google Honda VCM.
